Teaching for Mastery for multi-school maths leaders
For Academy Trust Maths Directors (or similar) with multi-school responsibilities (both Primary & Secondary)

Being involved with this Work Group means being part of a team of other maths leaders, led by a skilled professional facilitator, to focus on a key issue and work together to develop professional practice.  It Is not about being a ‘passive receiver of your trainer’s wisdom’.  It is about attending face-to-face workshops to discuss key matters and develop ideas for new or revised practice.  It is also about using the time between face-to-face workshops (so called gap tasks) to explore those ideas in your own role and share feedback as a result.  This work group will lead to a new Local Leaders of Maths Education subgroup being formed.

What can I expect to be thinking about at the face-to-face workshops?
The first face to face sessions will ensure you gain a deep(er) understanding of the 5 Big Ideas which are the cornerstones of TfM, and provide you with a detailed insight of the TfM programmes available locally and their intended purpose. This first session may particularly extend your awareness about TfM development in the phase (secondary or primary) in which you do not normally operate.  The second session would explore effective TfM to specifically support SEND students and current strategies for disadvantaged students.  The final two sessions will lead to developing inclusive and effective strategic plans for TfM across your groups of schools.  These plans will be developed by being vision led and with a consultative approach to identifying key priorities and key milestones.

What will I be expected to do in completing the gap tasks?
The first Gap task would include the participants applying TfM techniques in their own teaching, perhaps in a phase outside of their normal experience.  The second task would be a small research task relating to SEND and/or disadvantaged student maths provision in your schools.  The third and final Gap Task would involve testing your draft vision, key priorities and key milestones with the maths leaders at each of your schools.

What will I gain from participating fully in this work group?
You will gain a deep(er) insight into TfM, the Maths Hub TfM programmes, and develop your strategic thinking for the future of Teaching for Mastery across your schools.  This will lead to you collaboratively developing an effective and inclusive strategic plan.  It will also offer you the opportunity to join a new, Maths Hub recognised Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME) group to continue into 2020/21 and beyond.

When and where are the face-to-face sessions?
Four day-long face-to-face workshop sessions will be held from 10.00 – 16.00 on dates:
Workshop 1: Monday 2 December 2019
Workshop 2: Tuesday 21 January 2020
Workshop 3: Tuesday 10 March 2020
Workshop 4: Tuesday 12 May 2020

Venue: Portland Conference Centre, Birchover Road, Bilborough, Nottingham NG8 4BW

Expectations of participating schools

Trusts will need to commit to the release of the same nominated leader(s) for all face-to-face workshops and to support them in the gap tasks.
Meeting time should be provided for the nominated leader(s) to share with their wider team the new, useful learning and ideas arising from attending the work group
The Trust will also support the participating leaders to summarise the impact of their workgroup participation as part of the professional development and Work Group evaluation.

Funding
The Work Group is offered free to all state-funded Trusts/School groupings in England

Who is leading the Work Group
David Berry, Senior Lead of the East Midlands West Maths Hub and a former Trust Senior Director of Maths
