TAHRI: Community-Driven Program Design
Thank you for your interest in technological human-robot interaction (HRI)!

Summary
We're organizing the 2024 International Symposium on Technological Advances in Human-Robot Interaction (TAHRI) on March 9-10, 2024 in Boulder, CO, USA (i.e., two days before and co-located with the 2024 HRI conference), and we need your help to make it an amazing inaugural event! For more information, please visit: https://tahri.org

The survey should take  ~5-10 minutes to complete.

Definition
For the purposes of this survey, we define "technological HRI" as hardware, software, actuators, sensors, mechanisms, algorithms, models, methods, interfaces, automations, frameworks, architectures, benchmarks, datasets, tools, techniques, or other technologies that, with reasonable effort, can be directly incorporated into the design, development, or deployment of an HRI system.

Background
In a previous survey, HRI researchers expressed feelings that there is currently no single "home" for high-quality technological HRI work, instead feeling like visitors spread across multiple venues.  Notably:
  1. Researchers search for but don't consistently find high-quality technological HRI work at any one venue.
  2. Researchers submit but don't consistently publish their high-quality technological HRI work at any one venue.
Motivated by these insights, we are a community of HRI researchers who have been working hard to establish a single "home" venue for high-quality technological HRI research: Technological Advances in Human-Robot Interaction (TAHRI).

Further insights from our survey indicated that the community does not want a new conference (due to feelings of "conference overload"), but, rather, a multi-day event (i.e., more than a workshop) co-located with an existing conference.  To accommodate this request, the inaugural TAHRI symposium will be held on March 9-10, 2024 in Boulder, CO, USA, two days before and co-located with the 2024 HRI conference.

Finally, researchers indicated that they wanted to submit to (or otherwise contribute to or participate in) a technological HRI event with indexed proceedings, so we're doing just that—the TAHRI proceedings will be indexed!

Purpose of Survey
However, in our previous survey, researchers also identified program-related challenges they have experienced in publishing technological HRI work at other venues.  To continue our community-driven effort, this survey seeks to help us better identify ways to address these program-related challenges so we can implement your insights with TAHRI.

Addressing program-related challenges for technological HRI work
In our original survey, HRI researchers identified four core program-related challenges in publishing their technological HRI work at existing conferences:
  1. Challenges with forum focus
  2. Challenges with reviewer guidelines
  3. Challenges with reviewer qualifications
  4. Challenges with acceptance rates
Below, we will ask for your personal recommendations / preferences on how to address these challenges.
What are some topics / themes that could be a focus of a technological HRI contribution to TAHRI?
(Feel free to include examples from other conferences, ideally, with URLs.)
What are some evaluation guidelines / criteria for reviewing a technological HRI contribution to TAHRI?
(Feel free to include examples from other conferences, ideally, with URLs.)
What are some ways in which you would identify and align the qualifications of a reviewer with a technological HRI contribution to TAHRI?
(Feel free to include examples from other conferences, ideally, with URLs.)
Who are some researchers (e.g., individuals, research groups, citations, URLs, etc.) you think would be appropriate to review technological HRI contributions to TAHRI (including, but not limited to, you or your own research group)?
How should an acceptance rate be established across all technological HRI contributions to TAHRI?
(Feel free to include examples from other conferences, ideally, with URLs.)
Additional comments (if any) regarding program-related challenges of technological HRI work
Submitting and reviewing technological HRI work
Based on ongoing discussions with the community, TAHRI will accept three (3) types of technological HRI papers:
  1. Standard review paper (6–8 pages, indexed, due Dec. 1, 2023):
For technological HRI work intended to go through a full peer-review process

  2. Rapid review paper (6–8 pages, indexed, due Jan. 19, 2024):
For technological HRI work for which supplemental review materials can be provided, such as previous reviewer comments and a summary of revisions

  3. Short paper (2–4 pages, not indexed, due Jan. 19, 2024):
For technological HRI work with preliminary results or details of accessible artifacts
To help us plan appropriately, below, we will ask how likely your are to submit at least one of these types of technological HRI paper to TAHRI, and how many of each paper you might submit (as an author) and/or review (as a potential member of the Program Committee).

(All responses are optional.)

Joining the TAHRI Program Committee
We are looking to expand the TAHRI Program Committee (PC) to select high-quality papers to present at TAHRI, and we invite you to join us!

As a PC member, your primary tasks would include:
  1. recruiting two (2) external reviewers per paper for up to five (5) standard review papers; and/or
  2. evaluating up to five (5) rapid review papers based on previous reviewer comments and a summary of revisions.
In addition, you will initiate and moderate discussions between reviewers, write meta-reviews, and participate in online PC meetings in which final TAHRI program decisions are made.

Below, we will ask if you would like to join the Program Committee and how many papers you might be willing to review.

(All responses are optional.)
