22nd ANNUAL BANJO GATHERING REGISTRATION FORM
Come to the 22nd Annual Banjo Gathering, October 24-27, 2019, for three days of presentations, exhibitions, a concert, and a banjo marketplace for studying, buying, selling, and trading historical and vintage banjos, banjo parts, and related items, as well as banjos from some of today’s finest instrument makers. Since 1998, the Banjo Gathering has been the platform for banjo collectors, researchers, instrument builders, and musicians to share new scholarship and findings about the banjo as a historical, cultural, and design object.
The Banjo Gathering will be hosted by Arts@ODU, on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia. Norfolk is an important 400-year-old port city in the heart of the Hampton Roads region and home to the largest naval base in the world. ODU boasts more than 24,000 students across eight colleges, the largest of which is the College of Arts and Letters, which maintains Arts@ODU, the University’s arts organization offering a rich array of visual, performing, and literary arts featuring internationally celebrated guests and innovative works by faculty and students.
Set against the backdrop of Norfolk’s 400-year role as a key port city, this year’s Gathering features two themes:
THEME 1: BANJOS ACROSS THE WATER — explore how banjo history is shaped by travel, commerce, and industry across the world’s waterways.
THEME 2: INSPIRATIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY BANJOS — discover how contemporary makers use historical banjos and other musical instruments, as well as domestic and international art and design, as inspiration for their instruments.
