CropScan Research Survey
Olds College/MGT 3500 Overview:

This survey is being conducted by four Bachelor of Applied Science in AgriBusiness students from Olds College as their capstone project for their Applied Research course. Students have partnered with Olds College Centre of Innovation to bring the project forward. The goal of this project is to prepare a full research report that will discuss if it is feasible for the Western Canadian Crop Industry to implement and use CropScan technology for crop production. At the end of the project the students hope to better understand what would make farmers want to use the CropScan technology on their farms.

Industry Partner Overview (OCCI):

The Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) is a department of Olds College that assists in advancing economic development in rural Alberta through research and innovation. OCCI focuses on developing barley and triticale varieties, field crop and livestock production, environmental stewardship and smart agriculture technologies and practices (Olds College, n.d.)

What is CropScan

CropScan is a tool that is used by Australian and Canadian farmers. The CropScan tool measures protein, oil, starch, fiber as well as moisture in crops. The tool uses near infrared transmission to measure these quality parameters. The tool is attached to the side of the combine and collects samples from the clean grain elevator and automatically tests the sample. It then shows the combine operator the sample in real time as it is being harvested. As it is collecting the samples, CropScan builds maps that allows you to view the stored data (CropScan Ag, N.D.).
