PhD+ Made by History Op-Ed Panel Discussion

Date: Wednesday, April 5 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

During J-term, GAGE (Governing American in a Global Era) and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship Program host an editorial workshop for graduate students at UVA designed and taught by the editors of the “Made by History” column at the Washington Post. This workshop has resulted in numerous students publishing op-eds on topics both timely and grounded in their academic expertise.

This panel discussion features one of the Made by History editors and graduate students who have successfully placed op-eds, to celebrate their hard work and start a discussion about humanities scholars writing in the public sphere. You’ll hear more about the J-term workshop, the panelists’ motivations for writing op-eds, and how to deal with some of the challenges of public writing (including finding the time, dealing with public response, and making public writing part of academic or non-academic careers).

Panelists:

  • Katie Brownell, “Made by History” editor
  • Brianna Frakes, PhD student, History
  • Bethany Bell, MA student, Bridge to the Doctorate fellow, History
  • Cassondra Hanna, MA student, Bridge to the Doctorate fellow, History
