A
Photo Exhibition with the work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning, legendary Greek
Photojournalist Yannis Behrakis, who passed away in 2019, at the age of 58, is
taking place at the European Parliament from the 6th to the 10th
of February.
You
are kindly invited to the opening of the exhibition, that will take place on
the 7th of February at 18:00 at the Spinelli 3D – Bar Area.
The
exhibition "Yannis Behrakis: Eyewitness to the planet’s wars" is
organized by Stelios Kouloglou, MEP, with the cooperation of the family of
Yannis Behrakis and includes 50 of the most prominent photographs of the career
of the Reuters photojournalist: From the most troubled regions of the planet,
to wars, natural disasters, the refugee crisis and other events he covered.
Yannis Behrakis was one of the greatest news photographers and war
correspondents of all time, achieving numerous distinctions.
Apart
from his excellent work in storytelling with the most accurate way, often
risking his life, he was particularly influential with his moral contribution.
His poignant images often became the means to cause global awareness in a range
of issues. He had stated some years before he passed away: "My mission is
to ensure that no one can say 'I didn't know'."
After
the opening, there will be a discussion, at 18:30 (room ASP 1G2 "Manolis
Glezos") in the memory of Yannis Behrakis, but also on the modern
challenges of journalism and photojournalism, for the survival of the truth on
the battlefields and conflicts around the world. Colleagues, collaborators and
friends of Yannis Behrakis from his professional career have been invited and
will take the floor, as well as representatives of international organisations
for Journalism and media outlets. The event takes place 4 years after the loss
of Behrakis and 1 year after the start of the war in Ukraine.
