Application Form: Uyghur History Course, 2023
The Tarim Network will be having a second run of our Uyghur History Class! Please read below for further information before applying.

Course description:
Our team has decided to continue with a seminar structure, which will feature readings and moderated discussions. The interactive curriculum, also featuring guest speakers, will take from both English and Uyghur sources and may require some understanding of both, although required readings will be primarily in English. The material will span from ancient to present day Uyghur history. Our goal is to actively and critically engage with academic works to enrich our understanding of Uyghur history through thoughtful, respectful discussion and inquiries. We would like to reiterate that this will be a seminar style class, NOT lecture based, as we feel this structure best facilitates the goals of this course.

Student feedback from 2022

"Before taking the course, I didn't expect it to be so exciting in many aspects. Every week we had a session, in which we discussed assigned readings, had student presentations, and sometimes, had a guest speaker. The discussions were fruitful and made things clearer, as I learned a lot from other person's thoughts. Student presentations helped me to summarize the readings, and from time to time, highlighted points I was missing. In addition, we had an excellent opportunity to have top Uyghur historians in our meetings, where students could ask questions and get answers directly from the readings' authors.

Apart from learning about Uyghur history from the early middle ages to the present time, I met a lot of like-minded people, who created a friendly atmosphere and made the learning process easy.

I would recommend this course to everyone interested in Uyghur history, even if you are not familiar with it at all. I also would like to thank Esedullah, Munawwar, Berna, and all students for this opportunity to study Uyghur history."

"This course definitely filled the gap in my understanding of the Uyghur history from ancient times to modern day. It was also great to meet other students and discuss the readings, as well as make new friends. Thank you, Tarim Network, for making a tangible change in preserving and educating Uyghur history and culture in a way that is accessible and fun!"

"This course is an amazing stepping stone in learning more about Uyghur history and culture. It fits people with little previous knowledge of the subject, as well as those with a more advanced understanding of Uyghur history. All the readings, notes, presentations, and discussions stay with you after the course is complete and are worth revisiting and rereading. All students showed great dedication and it was inspiring, for the first time in my life, to be in a group full of young Uyghurs striving to know more about our heritage. I definitely recommend applying and attending this course to anyone interested."

"If you are regularly having fights with your Dada in the kitchen regarding the history of Uyghurs, this course is for you 🤣

Jokes aside, this History course is indeed a well structured and comprehensive way of getting to know Uyghur history and history of East Turkestan. I loved learning, reading and presenting absolutely new material to the class. The cherry on top were regular discussion sessions with various scholars and historians. It allowed our class to expand the knowledge and get advice on each topic. For me this course was eye opening, as I have never thought there are that much materials available to study. It pushes you to start reading and learning who you are, and where you belong. Class discussions were rarely only historical, they were also philosophical and critical.

This history course is a great opportunity to expand you knowledge base, network and get motivation to learn more! Endless rehmet to the whole TN team for organising it!"
