You are beginning an application for US student-athletes to participate with Coach for College during Summer 2020.  Please complete the entire application.  The application deadline is February 9th, 2020, with the exception  of the following partner universities:

Applicants may be contacted by a member of CFC's selection committee or their athletic department for a phone interview.  Official invitations for Summer 2020 spots will be sent by email in late February.

This application asks for information about you, the camp dates you are available for, your preferred sports and subjects to teach, as well as 6 essay questions about your interest in Coach for College and experience.

The following application will take a minimum of 20 minutes to complete, excluding the essay questions, which require some prior reflection.  Feel free to browse through the form, but when beginning to fill the application out, it must be completed in one session.  If you exit the application before completing it, none of your answers will be saved and you must begin again (we recommend writing your responses to the long answer questions separately, and copying them into the form).

If you own a valid passport, you will need to email a digital copy for your application to be complete, so please ensure you have that ready. It is not necessary to own a valid passport to apply, though should you be accepted, at that point it will be imperative to apply for one immediately, using the expedited process.  To avoid the higher, expedition fees, applicants may choose to apply for a passport prior to acceptance using the regular speed, no later than January 20th.

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, please do not hesitate to contact Seth Napier at seth.napier@coachforcollege.org.
Essay questions
How does participating in Coach for College contribute to the fulfillment of your long term educational, career, and/or life goals? *
Please describe a time you experienced adversity or failure, how you dealt with the situation, and what you learned from it. *
What are important lessons you think you might gain from immersing yourself in rural Vietnam? *
If a child has little motivation for school or thinks he is unable to achieve his long-term goals, what can you do to have a positive influence on this child? *
Please describe a time when you taught, mentored or coached a group of children, and explain the strategies you used to get them excited about the material you were teaching. *
Please describe a time when you worked with people from diverse backgrounds to achieve a common goal, and explain the strategies that allowed you to work together successfully. *
Thinking creatively about your personal and family's network, the resources you will be provided by the program, and other means of raising funds (on campus fundraisers, businesses, organizations, and/or individual donors), briefly describe the tools you intend to use in your fundraising effort.
Typically, partner universities contribute a significant portion of the costs directly to CFC (usually $3,500), with there being an additional fundraising component for the participant (contact CFC for school-specific details).  Remember, unless your school is contributing more or less, you are committing to raise a minimum of $1,680 (and hopefully more) in support of the general operating budget of the CFC camps.  Your fundraising success is an integral component of your CFC experience, and you will be expected to contribute any fundraising shortfall at the end of the fundraising period, ten days before your departure.

Summer plans
Please indicate the camp dates you are available for, and your order of preference.  If you do not have a strong difference in preference between two or more camps, please indicate the same ranking number for each of those camps.

Dates refer to the day you would leave the US, and the date you would land on the way back.

Camp 2 (June 17 - July 13) *
Camp 3 (July 15 - August 10) *
Departure airport possibilities *
If you are selected to participate in Coach for College, which THREE airports would you be able to fly out of?   (You will be responsible for funding and arranging ground transport to the airport.  Flights will be booked round trip, to and from one of these airports.  We will be in touch before booking tickets to confirm your plans, so if your flight options change,  you will be able to share this then, prior to ticket purchase).
Sports - Preferences
Please rate the sports classes based on your preference and ability to teach them.  If you have the same preference for two or more sports, please give each of those the same ranking number.

Bear in mind that for basketball, ultimate frisbee, tennis and baseball (we teach a simplified, wiffle ball version), the children will be at a very beginning level.  The children usually are familiar with volleyball and soccer, though the majority of them have not played either one extensively or in an organized way.

Basketball *
Soccer *
Volleyball *
Tennis (CFC built a sports court with tennis capabilities at one of the five schools we hold camps at). *
Ultimate Frisbee (Vietnamese kids have usually never thrown a frisbee before) *
Dance (choreographing and teaching group dances, step by step).  View past examples here:  https://www.coachforcollege.org/dance *
Swimming (we have never taught this before, but may be able to negotiate access to a 25x50 ft. pool at one of our camps next summer) *
Sports - Details
Below, please list your qualifications for teaching each of the sports classes (such as experience coaching that sport, camps you have worked in, experience playing that sport in middle school and high school, experience playing in sports leagues for that sport, , etc.). If you feel you have no relevant qualifications for a particular sport, please state “None.”

The purpose of this and the following academic section is to match you best with what you are able to teach.  The better we understand your experience and ability to teach and coach each sport and subject, the better we can ensure that the teaching assignments for each camp are balanced and fit the participants' skill sets.

Since this part of the application does not enter into the selection process itself, it is not necessary to try to impress here.  Giving a good amount of detail and description here DOES however help us a lot AFTER selection, as we decide who among the camp participants is best suited to teach each sport.

Typically, two student-athletes teach each sport together, so both need not have equal depth of experience.

Swimming (most kids will have very basic, if any ability to swim) *
Academics - Subject preferences
Please rate all the academic classes based on your preference and ability to teach them.  If you have the same preference for two or more classes, please indicate the same ranking number for each.

Again, our focus here is not on selection, rather in trying to assign each chosen coach to a subject that they are able to teach, while covering all subjects in a given camp.
Biology *
Math *
Physics *
English (as a second language, similar to Spanish in middle school in the US) *
Computer skills (Our hope is to obtain laptops and teach the kids basic computer literacy.  We may pilot this in one or two camps this summer, if we are successful in obtaining a donation for used laptops.  We have not developed lesson plans yet, but the idea would likely be to teach how to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint). *
Academics - Description of background
Below, please describe your qualifications for teaching each of the five academic classes (teaching experience you have in these subjects, amount of relevant coursework you have taken, relevant internships or jobs you have had, etc), as well as a description of how confident you feel that you would be able to teach lessons in this subject. If you feel you have no relevant qualifications for a particular class, please simply state “None.”

NOTE: You will be given lesson plans to aid you in teaching each class of the academic subject you are selected to teach, so you mainly need to be able to follow and understand a lesson plan for that subject designed for Vietnamese 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th graders.

Remember that, as above with sports, this section is not used until after selection, to ensure that all our coaches are assigned to teach a subject they are able to.  There is no need therefore to feel you should impress.  We are most interested in getting an objective feel for if you or one of the other coaches in your camp would be best suited to teach Subject A, and who would fit best in Subject B, etc.  So the more descriptive the information you give us, the more accurate we can be.

Computer skills (particularly as relates to teaching Word, Excel, Powerpoint to kids who have never or rarely used them) *
Life Skills
Each participant will partner up with American and Vietnamese teammates to teach (typically 2 Americans and 2 Vietnamese coaches teaching together).  You will co-teach one subject and one sport to each of the teams of kids (one team of 10-15 kids at a time).  You will also be "on" one of the color teams: you will teach a life skills lesson each day to your team (dreams and goals, value of education, teamwork, leadership, overcoming obstacles, breaking an ambitious goal into achievable steps,  etc.), and you will also cheer for them on competition day.  As with academics, we will provide you with lesson plans, though you are encouraged to be creative and find your own ways to make the topic come alive.

You will teach all the kids the sport and academic subject you are assigned to, but you will develop a particularly close relationship with the individual kids on "your" team.  You will be surprised how meaningful and impactful your role as mentor and role model will be to them.
