  • What was the evolution in the disinformation landscape before and after the October 7th attack? Are we mostly dealing with disinformation or misinformation? What role do social media platforms play in the spread of disinformation?

  • How does disinformation affect the way in which people perceive the conflict? Who are the main actors struggling for narrative control?

  • What can be done to address and mitigate the impact of disinformation in the  Israel-Hamas conflict? What are the biggest challenges in identifying and combating disinformation in this context?

  • What are the potential consequences of disinformation in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict? What is your outlook on the future of disinformation as a hybrid threat or as a vector of attack parallel to warfare?

Since the 7th October attack, disinformation related to the Israeli-Hamas conflict and the situation in Gaza has spread massively on social media platforms. Disinformation poses significant risks, distorting the perception of events, shaping public opinions, and potentially fueling heightened tensions both within and beyond the countries involved in the conflict.

We have invited four experts to discuss the relevance and ramifications of this surge in disinformation: Todd Helmus and William Marcellino, researchers at the RAND Corporation, both experts on disinformation and violent extremism, Alessandro Accorsi, investigative journalist and Senior Analyst for the International Crisis Group, and Dina SadekMiddle East research fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab).
