Instrument help

Learning a musical instrument can be a wonderful experience for children. The opportunity to perform and to play with others can bring a huge amount of pleasure and build confidence in young people. Choosing the right instrument for an individual is an important decision. The size of the instrument, its sound and appeal, a child's physical development and their personality, and the ability to set time aside for regular practice are all important factors to consider before making a decision. Group taster sessions may be available for Woodwind, Strings and Brass instruments in advance of choosing 1:1 lessons, to enable children to try out different instruments first. Advice is always available from the Head of Music in the Junior School (Miss Micklethwaite) and the music team. If a child is considering taking up a second instrument, it may be helpful for parents to discuss this first with both the Head of Music and the child's Form Teacher.
