Overseas born trans, non-binary and intersex people need our correct name and gender recognised in Aotearoa too!

Rainbow Path is a peer support and advocacy group for LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers living in Aotearoa. We have been lobbying hard for trans, nonbinary and intersex asylum seekers and refugees to be able to get our correct name and gender on Identity Documents (IDs) available to us.

We recognise that the issues are broader and also affect many other trans, non-binary and intersex migrants, especially those who are unable to get their gender and name recognised in their country of origin.

We would like to meet with other trans, non-binary and intersex people born overseas to identify the range of different barriers we face and explore potential solutions. We want to support each other to raise these issues in the government’s consultation sessions a few weeks later in late June and early July.

If you want to read more about these community discussions that Rainbow Path is organising first, please head to our blog: https://rainbowpathnz.com/2022/05/23/join-this-community-discussion-organised-by-rainbow-path/

None of the personal details you share during these community discussions will be shared with anyone not on the Zoom call. You can also join the Zoom calls with your video off if that feels safer for you. Everyone on the call will be reminded how important it is to not share information that could disclose another person's identity. It will be your choice whether you then join the later calls with people from the Department of Internal Affairs and what you choose to share.

Thank you for registering for Rainbow Path's Zoom call. Please tell us the name and pronoun you would like to use on the call: *
We want the Zoom call to focus on people born overseas who were excluded from the recent BDMRR Bill. Are you a trans, non-binary or intersex person born overseas?  Tick 1 or more boxes. *
Required
We plan to have two Zoom calls. Let us know if you can make either or both of these date/s?   *
Required
We have a few more questions to help us make the discussion useful for everyone. These questions are about trying to get your correct name or gender on an official New Zealand document. For example, this might be your KiwiAccess card, driver licence, student ID or academic records, bank account, or Immigration NZ visas.
How important is it for you to have your correct name and/or gender on official NZ documents? *
Not important at all
Very important
Have you ever TRIED to get your correct name and/or gender on any official NZ documents? Please tell us which documents. *
Have you been ABLE to change your name and/or gender on any official NZ documents? Please tell us which documents. *
Finally, we need your email address to send you the Zoom link for the call: *
Please let us know if there is anything in particular you would like to discuss in the meeting
Please note:
This Zoom call will not focus on changing details on overseas documents, because the New Zealand government has no power to change those.

We are also asking a few allies to join, because they support people born overseas to change details on NZ documents.
Thank you for registering! We will email you soon with the Zoom link :)
