Foundation Literature & Composition Term 2, 2021 Time: 11 am - 12 pm for 8 weeks.
This class is intended for those who would typically by working at a years 9 - 10 level if at school, and capable year 8 students approximately 12 - 15 years.
Students should be able to read, write and interact with others in the class at this level. Students should be comfortable sitting and writing at least 1 paragraph independently as a weekly homework task will be required to practice what is learned in class which may involve 1 - 2 paragraphs of writing per week and working towards longer compositions such as essays, book reports, research reports and more.
The intention of this class is to extend student's understanding of literary ideas an their core literacy skills to help them express themselves with more clarity and eloquence through different styles of writing in response to literary works. Students will also work towards longer pieces of writing such as essays and personal responses and maybe even speeches.
To this end, we will be looking at literary themes, language features, word usage, sentence and paragraph structure thought the study of literature which exemplifies these things.
As part of this, we will look at examples of writing in literature and studying different styles of writing from these examples before applying the learned writing techniques and strategies to our own writing. This will involve studying a highly regarded novel in-depth to explore the themes and ideas explored in the novel and the language features and other techniques used to convey these.
In term 2 we will begin with a study of the book "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," by Mildred D. Tayor.
"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the story of the Logan family, African-American farmers living in Mississippi in the 1930s. The Logans successfully battle racism to keep their land and stay together as a family."
We will also be completing a related research project and learning how to write a research report.
