Students should be able to read, write and interact with others in the class at this level. Students should be comfortable sitting and writing at least 1 paragraph independently as a weekly homework task will be required to practice what is learned in class which may involve 1 - 2 paragraphs of writing per week and working towards longer compositions such as essays, book reports, research reports and more.

The intention of this class is to extend student's understanding of literary ideas an their core literacy skills to help them express themselves with more clarity and eloquence through different styles of writing in  response to literary works. As part of this, we will look at examples of writing in literature and studying different styles of writing from these examples before applying the learned writing techniques and strategies to our own writing. This will involve studying a highly regarded novel in-depth to explore the themes and ideas explored in the novel and the language features and other techniques used to convey these.

In term 2 we will begin with a study of the book "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," by Mildred D. Tayor.

"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the story of the Logan family, African-American farmers living in Mississippi in the 1930s. The Logans successfully battle racism to keep their land and stay together as a family."
