The Alaska Rural Fire Protection Operations Training: A four-day (40 hours) class to certify in the Alaska Rural Fire Protection Operations, which is designed for rural firefighters, rural Fire Chiefs, and rural Village Police Officers. While working with other rural firefighters from around the state this training gives participants new ideas in community fire prevention, methods for recruitment and retention of rural community firefighters, and hands on suppression techniques.    
Topics: Learn about recruiting new members, retaining current members, rural fire prevention, starting up a rural fire department, fire behavior, rural firefighting strategies and tactics, and use of rural fire equipment.  Special emphasis is placed on firefighter safety.
Registration Cost: This training is conducted with funding from the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety (DFLS) and all approved applicants may be eligible receive a tuition waiver. See below for details on cost sharing additional expenses for training.
Scholarships: The Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety has limited scholarship funds that will provide travel (travel days are May 31 and June 5), and lodging.  Attendance and participation in all training sessions is mandatory. **If an applicant fails to show up after being accepted, your community may not be eligible for future scholarships under this program and will be responsible for reimbursement of associated costs.**
Application Process: Students must complete the online application or email the completed application to: dps.BFAST@alaska.gov.  Scholarships will be selected by the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety.  Only one scholarship may be provided to each community, although more may be available as funds allow.

All lodging during travel to and from the training will be the responsibility of the applicant and/or community.  Training starts at 8am June 1, 2024.  Applicants should plan to arrive in Palmer on May 31.  The training ends at 6pm Tuesday June 4.   *
