Join us in the department of Earth Sciences to tour the Godwin Laboratory for Palaeoclimate Research. A true historical gem in Cambridge, this lab was once headed up by Sir Nicholas John Shackleton (pictured on a 2010 Royal Mail postage stamp!), who developed the widely used technique of measuring oxygen isotopes in foraminifera to estimate palaeotemperatures. On this tour of the lab's facilities, you will see a marine core split open, some of the mass spectrometers used to measure stable isotopes, species of foraminifera microfossils under magnification, as well as exciting new techniques for extracting water from gypsum to track paleoclimate from arid environments. You will meet the director of the lab today, Prof. David Hodell, as well as many of the researchers who will be presenting short highlights of their work.
