Admission Requirements
NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE: Students will be notified by mail of acceptance into the program.
1. Each applicant must have…
• An overall 2.75 grade point average for the eighth grade year.
• A LEAP scaled score of 730 for Reading and 730 for Math.
*For 8th graders presently attending a Caddo school, the most recent test will be the 6th grade LEAP.*
• Proficient scores on the 8th grade LEAP tests.
• Attendance rate at 90% or above.
• Maintained a good discipline record.
**Students not currently enrolled in a Caddo Parish public school must present a copy of their birth certificate, health record, and social security card.**
2. Southwood High School will admit students after the close of the registration period if the applicant is moving to Caddo Parish from another parish or state or currently enrolled at a private school. Admission after the deadline is contingent on available space.
3. Out of parish or state applicants will be considered only if the student is entering the 9th or 10th grade and meets all requirements for admission. Those students entering the 11th or 12th grade are not eligible for admission.
4. In parish applicants must enter the program as freshman and must complete all courses of study at Southwood High School due to the emphasis of the curriculum on Biotechnology. Students not selected for the program, who meet the admission requirements will be placed on a waiting list and will be eligible for placement into the program at mid-term or the beginning of the sophomore year, as space is available.
5. Admission is conditional, pending validation of student’s eighth grade proficient LEAP test scores.
Discipline and attendance records will also be reviewed.
TRANSPORTATION POLICY
• THE CADDO PARISH SCHOOL BOARD SHALL PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR MAGNET STUDENTS FROM A POINT AT OR NEAR THEIR RESIDENCES WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
• WHEN TRANSPORTATION IS NOT POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF DISTANCE, ROUTING OR OTHER GOOD AND JUST CAUSE, THE PARENT WILL TRANSPORT THE STUDENT TO THE CLOSEST DESIGNATED PICKUP POINT TO THE STUDENT’S RESIDENCE.
According to Caddo Parish School Board Policy, student will remain enrolled at Southwood High School Biotechnology Program for one (1) year. We understand that satisfactory academic progress (2.75 G.P.A) with no D or F level grades in Biotech curriculum classes, regular attendance, and a good discipline record are mandatory for admission and continued study in the Biotechnology Magnet.
