BandSwap 2023 Sign Up
Cozy up for winter with some new bands and raise some funds for KIAC! BandSwap (formerly BandCycle) is Friday, February 24th @ 8pm at Gerties. Sign up and we'll swap everyone around and create new bands! Each new band will be given a band to cover and will play 3 songs on the Gertie's Stage. Bands will be announced by February 1st, so that bands have several weeks to prepare!

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Who am I going to be in a band with?
We assign bands, but do want you to feel comfortable with who you are playing with. Part of the fun is meeting new folks, and playing with people you've never jammed with before. Bands will primarily be formed by who's available at the same time, then instrumentation and will include one 'organizer'. We'll also try to make sure everyone's got at least one buddy in the band, so we've give you a spot to identify those people.

2. Who teaches us the songs?
It's up to each band to learn three songs on their own. Print tabs, learn by ear, whatever's best for you. You don't have to play it just like the recording -- feel free to put your own unique spin on it.

3. How do I know what instrument I'm going to play? Do I need my own instrument?
Bands will be formed to make sure they have the basis for a band (i.e. each band will have a singer, a rhythm instrument, and a melodic instrument). Bands will then decide what works best for them. You WILL need your own instrument to practice on and use at the performance. KIAC can help arrange instruments and amps for rent.

4. I'm not an expert musician. Can I still sign up?
Totally! There is an expectation however, that you will be able to learn the songs, so you'll need enough musical skill to do that.

5. I've never heard of/don't really like the musician we have been assigned? What do I do?
Please stick with the assigned band, try changing up the arrangement, or style. If you REALLY want to do a different artist, let us know and we'll assign you a new one.

6. Where can we practice????
Jam space can be a challenge in Dawson. There is a spot on the sign up for people to identify if they have a space to offer which will be considered in band formation. KIAC is available for rent by members (but times may be limited depending on what other KIAC programming is planned).

7. I'm under 19. Can I sign up??
Unfortunately since the event will take place at Gerties, a casino and bar, registration is limited to 19+.

Band Formation
We'll form bands based on availability (so you can actually meet), experience (mixing newbs and vets) and the best/most interesting mix of instruments. We'll try to give you your top instrument choice, but sometimes it just can't happen given who's applied. But, we'll do our best. We swear.

This will help us match you with some folks you might jive with.
