In Texas, Pelican Island is an island located in Galveston County, and is part of the city of Galveston.

In Florida, Pelican Island is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge located in the Indian River Lagoon east of Sebastian.

But before there were places called Pelican Island in Texas and Florida, there was California:

In 1775 Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala discovered the San Francisco Bay and upon seeing all the brown pelicans circling the islands (Angel, Yerba Buena and Alcatraz) gave the name Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of Pelicans), to what is now Yerba Buena Island. The name was transferred in 1826 to what we now know as Alcatraz Island.

Sure, you know all about how Alcatraz was a Federal prison, but how much do you really know about the little island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay we call “The Rock?”
