Global Perspective on Korea’s Early Struggle for Independence, 1876-1930: the Background of the TV Drama “Mr. Sunshine”
Intro: Its purpose is to provide the residents of Suwon City with a good overview on Korea’s long Struggle for Independence from 1876 until 1930, from a global perspective, as a foreigner. This will include some comparison with other anti-colonial struggles at that time. Prof. Mason will utilize the Background of the top-hit TV Drama “Mr. Sunshine” to show what really happened vs. the fictional parts. The 3.1 Independence Movement will be seriously considered in its international context. However, this presentation will be fun to watch, with many colorful stories and photos from both the drama and history. Local and global Suwon Citizens will learn a lot of the “modern Korean History and Struggle for liberation and independence”.
2. lecture:
Global Perspective on Korea’s Mid-Century Struggle for Nationhood, 1930-1950: the After-story of the TV Drama “Mr. Sunshine”
Its purpose is to provide the residents of Suwon City with a good overview about the latter part of Korea’s long Struggle for Nationhood, the two decades from 1930 until 1950, from a global perspective, as a foreigner. This will include some comparison with other anti-colonial struggles and post-WW-II nation-building efforts at that time. Prof. Mason will imagine the after-story of the top-hit TV Drama “Mr. Sunshine” to show what really happened to Korea in those fateful years. The dramatic 1936 Berlin Olympics, the 1945 national division and the 1948 Jeju Massacre and then national elections will be seriously considered in their international contexts, and then the ominous prelude to the Korean War. However, this presentation will be fun to watch, with many colorful stories and photos from both the drama and history
