Note: This is the initial offering of this seminar. Participants can expect some bumps along the way, but in exchange will have the opportunity to help us refine this learning experience. It will be offered again next summer (2025) if you would rather wait until we have all the kinks worked out.
Once you complete the form below, you will receive an automated reply with your registration information. Please check your spam if you don't see it in your inbox. Accepted applicants will be notified by May 6, 2024. Priority will be given to those who currently teach about Taiwan or have the capability to add content about Taiwan in some way.
The seminar begins May 27 and ends September 2. Using the My Virtual Mission platform, participants will cycle (both virtually and the distance in reality) 612.1 miles* around Taiwan, stopping at twelve required milestones to complete readings, view webinars/videos, and respond to discussion prompts. This seminar is appropriate for those who are new to learning about Taiwan as well as those who have previous knowledge and experience.
Note: Some of the material is the same as previous FCCEAS Taiwan seminars. Participants from those previous seminars are welcome to apply for this seminar as we have greatly augmented and expanded those materials.
Note: Accommodations can easily be made for those who do not wish to cycle. Accepted participants will be provided with details.
Note: You must be comfortable navigating the My Virtual Mission platform and Google Earth (via My Virtual Mission). My Virtual Mission is not difficult to use, and it is integral to this learning experience.
There is some freedom to progress at your own pace, but you must complete all of the required units by September 2. You will receive a syllabus specifically for the summer 2024 seminar in early May. Projected milestone topics include: sports, geography, technology, politics (democracy), transitional justice, colonial experiences, indigenous Taiwan, maritime history, artistic culture, food/food culture, religion, pop culture, and agriculture/environmental policies.
In addition to receiving access to the My Virtual Mission route and the milestone e-mails you will also receive a free set of the required seminar books. You will have access to supplementary materials on the seminar Moodle, where you will also respond to the discussion prompts for each of the milestones. Participants who complete all the requirements will receive a certificate of completion for 40 contact hours and a $150 completion stipend.
Those who finish by Sept. 2 will be entered into a drawing for a special prize from Taiwan! If you do not complete the seminar, you must either return or pay for the books (est. $125).
Limited to 20 in-service K-12 teachers.
*One 50-mile stretch on the east coast of Taiwan is considered to be very dangerous for cyclists--2-lane road, no shoulder much of the way, ocean on one side, cliffs on the other, and possible falling boulders. You may choose to take a "free pass" on that stretch, resulting in a 562.1 mile virtual ride. You'll still be able to view that section virtually on the My Virtual Mission platform.
