Quoique fortement soumis à la discrimination, les Africains-Américains s’enrôlèrent en masse dans l’armée américaine pendant la première guerre mondiale. Ainsi, grâce notamment à l’orchestre militaire du lieutenant Jim Europe (1880-1919), le jazz y fit ses premiers pas. Tels Albert Alexander Smith (1896-1940) et Horace Pippin (1888-1946), des peintres ou futurs peintres traversèrent également l’Atlantique. Et de cette traversée résulta un bon nombre d’œuvres d’art, réalisées sur place ou après coup. Cette conférence retracera le parcours de ces artistes, qui ont autant contribué à l’essor de la modernité en France qu’aux Etats-Unis.
