many of us long for loving and caring communities. we want to be our best selves and we want the best for others. we want healing, understanding, and growth. i think many of us (especially queer and racialiazed people) push ourselves into embodying these ideals with the expectation that everyone around us wants similar things. Some of us are speed-running anti-oppression without a genuine understanding of trauma or violence (i hate/love to say it but it takes labour, study and intention!) unfortunately many of us fail (in our communities, friendships, between partners, etc.) because we lack knowledge, support, and stability. hurt people hurt people or whatvr! sometimes we are not even decent people yet! instead of burying these failures, we must embrace failure as a part of our choice to not only struggle together, but in our efforts for sincere care and love under capitalism + white supremacy. it is very difficult to form loving bonds when most of us are raised to accept and give hurt. hurt people hurt people… we just live in that type of reality, but want healthy love and care (this is not wrong to want, but it can be upsetting and stressful when our ideals become shattered). failures will continue to occur and we must accept them and honour them. just as we can not live without love (thank u bell hooks), we cannot change without interrogation/critique, we cannot be kind without taking responsibility, etc etc.

accepting prose, photography, drawings, poetry, mini comics, letter (love letter? hate letter?), collage, playlists, photos, finished page, memories, etc.

specs:
5.5x8” stapled or saddle stitched OR 6x9” coil bound if there are a lot of submissions (i have been a sucker for the coil lately). black and white on coloured paper, maybe some cute inserts depending on what gets submitted!

pay:
there is no $$, i will be printing enough for all participants plus extras to sell to cover the cost of printing + extras to donate to zine libraries. the zine will also be documented online (maybe) with image descriptions. i am not looking for anything super polished or refined and i urge you not to spendtoo much time or stress about it if you want to participte. i am printing and mailing out of pocket. any extra $$ will be redistributed or put toward future projects, idk yet! i’ll be transparent about it though!

Use https://skytransfer.hns.siasky.net/#/ It's an open-source project that facilitates anonymous, encrypted file transfer. No sign-up of any kind, nothing to install. Upload your file and copy paste the link here! You may also send files via email natalie_mark@outlook.com with the subject line: "Failure Zine Submission". I know the submission steps are a bit tedious, but I wanted anonymity to be an option and other sites charging for it.

Writing boundaries
Tell me your boundaries with your work. I like to cut up text and paste it on pages (keeping general format and order), add doodles, stickers, etc. All names aside from artist name will be blacked out with a sharpie. I added an "Other" option if you have specific preferences outside of the given options.
Image boundaries
Tell me your boundaries with your work. I like full bleed images, but will respect what you want for your work. All names aside from artist name will be blacked out with a sharpie. Photos of faces will be blurred. I added an "Other" option if you have specific preferences outside of the given options.
Extra Insert
Would you be okay with your submission as a little insert for the zine? I probably won't follow through with this, but sometimes I am in a saucy mood and may want to include something flashy as a creative treat.
Playlist
I think playlists are cute... rec some songs or link them!
Any readings or citations?
If you have any passages or links to readings, I am happy to read them. I also believe that citation is feminist memory, if there is a lot of these I'll include a loose citation at the back! No need to be academic either, you can say something like "my mother, my ex" etc
Is there any other type of work that you would like to see from me?
