The potters of the NC Piedmont have been working with clay for thousands of years. Clay deposits, clay pits, and a plethora of clay materials are scattered throughout the state. Early Native American shards from cooking pots and drinking vessels with wonderful textures and marks from the fire are still here. Pots have evolved to suit use and needs throughout time and have continued in a steady stream in the Seagrove area.

A group of potters, currently living in the Seagrove area, who fire with wood, have come together over the last three years to make connections to share ideas. The book, Controlled Burn, has emerged from this. This talk will highlight the history of pottery in this area, our roots and diversity as a group, what brought us to the area and our approaches to the challenge of making a living firing with wood.

Together, we have chosen a local clay material that intrigues us; we have tested it with a series of smaller pieces. These tests have been approached individually by each of the potters. We will present the results of this cooperative and diverse project and discuss this process.
