If you are working with someone whom you consider an excellent social studies educator or student we ask that you please nominate them for one of the nine MCSS awards to be given at the State Conference.
Please fill out the form with basic demographic information and email the supplemental portion of the nomination documents to sroberts@mcssmi.org
Criteria that applies for all nine awards:
• Any MCSS member may nominate someone. If you are not a member, please become a member by clicking the link: https://mcssmi.org/membership-page. Only MCSS members may nominate individuals.
• Self-nominations are acceptable
• Nominees can only be nominated in one category
• All nominees should have demonstrated exceptional abilities in the following categories:
- Developing and using instructional strategies that are creative and effective
- Adhering to the rigors of the Michigan GLCEs or HSCEs, while maintaining solid student relationships
- Demonstrating an ability to foster citizenship in their students
- Professional involvement and deep knowledge of the social studies
Nomination Requirements for Educators of the Year and Student Teacher of the Year:
• Cover Page
• Letter of nomination stating why candidate is deserving of the award
• Two letters of support from colleagues, students, students’ parents, or administrators
• A curriculum vitae stating current teaching assignment
• A photo
Nomination Requirements for Social Studies Students of the Year:
• Three letters of recommendation, one from an administrator and two from teachers giving their rationale and evidence to why the student is deserving of this award
• Samples of student’s work, accomplishments, community service projects, with a focus on their citizenship
Nomination Requirements of Mel Miller Award for Social Studies Stewardship:
This award is named after long-time Macomb County educator, Mel Miller, who was beloved by all those who were fortunate to have known him. This award will be given to the individual who:
- Promotes innovative programs in social studies
- Goes beyond the classroom and implements programs to promote social studies and/or student growth
- Conducts themselves with the highest degree of professionalism
- Are integral leaders to their school and/or community and demonstrate this leadership regularly
To nominate someone for this award please submit:
• Three letters of recommendation, one from an administrator and two from colleagues giving their rationale to why the individual is deserving of the award.
• Submit evidence of criterion listed above.
Nomination of Terry Kuseske Award for Promoting Tolerance:
This award is named after the beloved long-time Dowagiac Union School District social studies teacher, Terry Kuseske who tirelessly worked in order to promote tolerance and equality as a teacher and leader in local politics. This award will be given to the educator who:
- Encourages tolerance and kindness in their schools and/or communities
- Implements programs to lessen bullying and intolerance
- Promotes and defends the rights of minority student issues
To nominate someone for this award please submit:
• Three letters of recommendation, one from an administrator and two from colleagues
giving their rationale to why the individual is deserving of the award.
• Submit evidence of criterion listed above.
