While you can choose from many different CSWS placements, there are are number of local environmental justice organizations interested in hosting students for the 2023-24 academic year. Partnerships for Climate Justice in the Bay Area (PCJ in the Bay) is an initiative of the Haas Center for Public Service that connects local environmental justice organizations with the Stanford Community. The following organizations below are connected to PCJ in the Bay and have experience working with Stanford students:

Belle Haven Action (BHA): a non-profit organization in the Belle Haven neighborhood of Menlo Park, partners with residents to amplify the voices of community leaders. BHA advocates for equity, inclusion, and acknowledgement of the diversity that makes this neighborhood unique. BHA engages closely with residents in Belle Haven, responding to the needs they identify by organizing programming and advocating with the city and county. Past and current initiatives include organizing COVID vaccine and testing sites, assisting residents in accessing affordable housing, obtaining free air filtration units for residents, and advocacy with the City Council for greater investment and needed services. Position description.

Climate Resilient Communities (CRC): In the Bay Area, as throughout the world, under-resourced communities are disproportionately vulnerable to climate change impacts. Since 2016, CRC has been on the ground, learning the specific needs of residents in diverse, under-resourced communities in East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks, and Belle Haven (Menlo Park). CRC’s outreach cultivates environmental awareness while giving local residents a voice in proactive resilience planning and adaptation. By building stronger alliances between residents, schools, local government programs and community-based organizations and implementing direct interventions, this work creates resilience against climate-related stresses such as sea-level rise and economic instability. Position description.

Communities for a Better Environment (CBE): is one of the preeminent environmental justice organizations in the nation. The mission of CBE is to build people’s power in California’s communities of color and low income communities to achieve environmental health and justice by preventing and reducing pollution and building green, healthy and sustainable communities and environments. CBE provides residents in heavily polluted urban communities in California with organizing skills, leadership training and legal, scientific and technical assistance, so that they can successfully confront threats to their health and well-being.

Nuestra Casa : has been serving the needs of the immigrant Latino population of East Palo Alto and surrounding communities since 2002. Our organization rose out of a community assessment conducted by a group of local activists who were concerned about the growing needs of the rising immigrant population. At Nuestra Casa, we welcome our community to a place that feels like home. We stand by their side to help them navigate institutions, build people’s power, and use their voice to shape a new, more equitable community. Our programs transform our leaders into advocates actively engaged in our local economy, school district, and civic life. Together, we will build a community that leaves no one behind. Position description.

Rise South City: is a community-based organization in South San Francisco, committed to creating dialogues with our frontline communities about climate change & social equity issues to learn about the different intersectional systems that underpin it and help develop local solutions for transformational reform. Rise South City is focused on clean community energy, regional food systems, zero waste, efficient, affordable, and lasting housing, public transportation, and ecosystem restoration solutions. We ensure that frontline communities are the forefront of shaping new economies and a new climate adaptive society rooted in fairness, equity, and ecological values. Position description

Valley Verde : is dedicated to building healthy and resilient communities by providing low-income families educational programs, edible gardens, and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities that create food security and lead to self-sufficiency. We accomplish this in our Shared Garden Program where we provide home garden supplies, monthly gardening workshops, mentorship, and garden visits to address the needs of food access and food insecurity in the community.
