Seventy years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in
Brown fundamentally reshaped the landscape of education and civil rights in the United States, becoming one of the most famous singular events of the civil rights movement. Nevertheless, in recent years scholars have increasingly emphasised the internal tensions, unresolved questions, and contested legacies of the decision, challenging
Brown's prominence in our understandings of the movement. Amid recent attacks on affirmative action and the teaching of Black history and Critical Race Theory,
Brown's multi-faceted legacies remain pressing topics today.
We will be discussing Brown's effects, legacies, and meanings with out distinguished panellists Kate Ballantyne (Liverpool John Moores University, Zoë Burkholder (Montclair State University), and Dionne Danns (University of Illinois, Chicago) at 13.00 EDT/18.00 BST on Wednesday 15th May, via Zoom.
