Your Story Matters is a 6-week creative circle designed to support at-risk BIPOC youth ages 12-18 navigate racism and trauma, and improve their well-being.
Merging the traditional formats of listening circles and support groups with modern workshop practices, we will be asking youth to share their experiences through activities and and discussion. Through the experiences that they share, the youth will be creating a comic book focused on their experiences, and what they believe they need to help them cope with and manage the challenges they face. While they reflect on their challenges, they will also learn of internal tools they can use to combat these challenges and culturally-informed community resources available to help them.
They will also engage in an introductory comic book-building workshop to help build new skills and learn about the power of their stories. The comic book that is created from this program will not only be a project that participants will take pride in, but it will also serve as an advocacy tool to improve services for at-risk BIPOC youth in Durham. Each participant will receive a hard-copy of their comic book at the end of the program.
Youth will receive a $25 honorarium for each week that they participate in this program. Transportation reimbursements will also be provided. Food will be provided on site at each session.
