The Student Advisory Board fosters and celebrates the success of student members and advocates for student concerns in the SBL. Serving as a volunteer on the SAB provides an excellent opportunity for graduate students to develop professionally and establish connections with the wider academic community. SAB members are active and diligent student leaders, passionate about graduate student concerns, and professional in their communications. Applications will be broadly considered according to the Society’s nominating procedures.
Representation: The SAB intends to elevate the voices of a marginalized group in the academy, namely students. As such, we seek to elevate further marginalized voices in biblical studies: Students from historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. We understand that this is an additional burden to ask of minoritized students in the academy, and we thank you for considering service on the SAB. To see current membership statistics in the SBL, please check out the 2019 SBL Membership Report:
https://www.sbl-site.org/assets/pdfs/sblMemberProfile2019.pdfRequirements: Applicants must be in a graduate program, with preference given to Ph.D. students. If chosen, the applicant agrees to attend all annual meetings and serve in their position for a full term (2 years with the possibility of 1 additional year).
For Consideration: Please fill out the application below and email a current CV and a cover letter that describes how you feel you could contribute to the Mission and Aims of the Student Advisory Board (
https://www.sbl-site.org/SBLcommittees_SAB.aspx) to the email addresses provided below. A cover letter is where your particular skills and experiences can shine, even (or especially) ones that don't make it onto a traditional CV. An integral part of serving on the Student Advisory Board is creating and chairing panels at the SBL Annual Meeting. In your cover letter, describe a panel that you would be interested in organizing at the Annual Meeting. Applications will be received until 9 October 2020. Decisions will be made in mid/late-October and applicants will be notified soon thereafter.
