Introduction to Public Speaking Grades 3 - 5* (Basking Ridge ONLY)
2 hours, including a 10/15 minute wiggle break | 3 - 5p
This class will explore the very basics of Public Speaking: body posture, facial expressions, hand gestures, eye contact, projection and pacing. An activities-based curriculum will allow students to practice these skills each day (think: presenting silly radio advertisements; "Pitching Your Partner" where kids introduce one another; Awesome Animal presentations, etc.) and will culminate in a short, recorded performance on Thursday to send home to parents. It is an excellent way to prepare students to get back in the classroom, and serves as a precursor to the full Public Speaking 101 curriculum.
Public Speaking 101 Grades 6-12 (Chatham & Basking Ridge)
2 hours, including a 5/10 minute wiggle break | 3-5p Chatham (July), 5:30 - 7:30p Basking Ridge (Aug)
Using videos, worksheets and exercises, we will focus on verbal communication, non-verbal communication (hand gestures, body language, facial expressions, eye contact, posture, etc.), pace, volume, tone and pitch. Students will also learn how to: prepare/calm down before speaking, organize their thoughts, generate conversation starters, speak extemporaneously and present speeches/TED Talks/etc. It is an excellent way to get ready for school, and serves as a precursor to Public Speaking 201.
