Who is SWGSA?
Social Work Graduate Student Association (SWGSA) was founded in 2001 and was created BY and FOR MSW students at SJSU!

Application Process
Our application will be open until Monday, 4/29/24 (noon). 

Please note: 
  • If multiple people apply for a specific position, voting will occur amongst the current MSW Student Body.
  • Once elections end, those who applied but were not elected into their first/top choice may be offered any remaining available open positions.
  • You can only apply for one position at a time
Eligibility
  1. Applicants must be enrolled in the SJSU MSW program between Summer 2024-Spring 2025
  2. Must maintain a minimum overall 3.0-grade point average and must be enrolled in at least six units
  3. Must be in good standing with SJSU
  4. No experience required
Executive Board of Directors
President (1 position available)

The President shall preside over SWGSA meetings and oversee the organization’s activities and responsibilities. Fulfill duties of BOD members who are unable to do so. Represent the student body of the Master of Social Work Program in various capacities and shall be responsible for any action the association takes.


Vice-President  (1 position available)
The Vice-President shall assume the duties of the President in the event of the absence of the President. The Vice-President shall also assist the President in duties as needed and fulfill the duties of BOD members who cannot do so.
Secretary (2 positions available)

The Secretary shall record minutes of each meeting, maintain accurate records of all business pertaining to the organization, maintain the membership database, and receive and respond to all official correspondence.


Treasurer (2 positions available)

The Treasurer shall control all SWGSA funds, their collection, and distribution and keep the general membership informed of financial matters concerning the association. This may also include applying for special grants or A.S. funding on behalf of the organization.


Committee Chairs/Board of Directors Available Positions 
The Committee Chairpersons shall be members of the Board of Directors and is require to attend meetings. Each Committee Chairperson shall be responsible for reporting the business of their committee at Board meetings and maintaining clear communication with other members of the Board. The committee chairpersons will also be responsible for meeting with their committee members as necessary. The responsibilities of each committee are outlined below
Convocation Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Convocation Chair(s) will oversee the "Convocation Committee," previously known as the "graduation committee."
 
As Chairs, you will plan and organize the yearly Social Work Convocation for the Class of 2025. This includes collaborating with USWA and its representatives. Duties include but are not limited to securing a venue, hiring vendors, hosting monthly committee meetings, securing guest speakers, and selling tickets.
Outreach Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Outreach Chair(s) will oversee the Outreach Committee. 
The committee is responsible for active outreach to all current and prospective social work students in the School of Social Work through social media (i.e., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), flyer creation and distribution, website updating, newsletters, and attending community events if possible.
Fundraising/Merchandise Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Fundraising/Merchandise Chair(s) oversees the Fundraising Committee.
Together, the committee shall oversee SWGSA’s merchandise and organize fundraising efforts. This includes but is not limited to designing apparel, keeping track of inventory, shipping orders, coordinating pickups, creating other promotional items, and finding creative ways to fundraise for the organization (i.e., tabling or partnering with local businesses to host fundraising events).
Social Events Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Social Events Chair(s) will oversee the Social Events Committee.
Together, the committee organizes and hosts major events hosted by the association, including and not limited to the annual Social Work Gala, End of the year BBQ, Zoom Socials, Comedy Night, Friendsgiving, and Back to School Events. The committee may also create and plan other social events outside of the traditional events listed above.
Social Justice Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Social Justice Chair(s) will oversee the Social Justice Committee.
Overall, the committee oversees any activities related to social justice initiatives that align with the NASW code of ethics. Overall, the main goal of the SJ committee is to spread awareness about social justice initiatives within our community and educate our students about various topics. This can be done by way of workshops, training, or campaigns.
Education & Empowerment Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The E&E Chairs oversee the Committee.
The committee organizes activities that increase and enhance social work knowledge and skills through workshops, speakers, training, and Authentic Conversations. This may include events such as internship networking mixer, mentoring events, LCSW Info Session, Authentic Conversations, or workshops that empower and further students' education. This may also include partnering with the School of Social Work to co-host the summer/Fall orientation events to welcome new incoming students.
On-Campus Student Representation Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The chairs will be responsible for overseeing the on-campus student rep. committee.

The committee shall include the following:
-four first-year cohort representatives (i.e., Cohort 1, 2, 3, 4)
-second/final year on-campus student representative(s)
-and an advanced standing student representative. 

The committee works on behalf of the on-campus MSW student population to advocate for their needs and organize events, training, or activities for the on-campus student body.
Online/Hybrid Student Representation Chair(s): (2 positions available)
The Online/hybrid Student Rep. Chairs will oversee the Committee.
The committee shall include:
-three first-year cohort representatives (i.e., Cohort 80, 81, 82), and 
-second/final year online/hybrid student representative(s). 

The committee is responsible for working on behalf of the SJSU MSW Online student population to advocate for their needs and organize events, training, or activities on behalf of the student body.
NASW Student Rep Chair: (2 positions available)
The NASW Student Representative will oversee the Committee. 

The committee is responsible for collaborating with the local NASW chapter and planning and participating in local NASW activities. The purpose of this committee is to act as a bridge between SJSU’s SSW and the local NASW chapter. Basic responsibilities may include but are not limited to attending NASW South Bay Unit meetings (~1x per month), organizing, recruiting for, and supporting SJSU MSW students in attending the NASW Legislative Lobby Days.
Podcast Host/Chair for The Social Work Experience Podcast: (applications will be a separate process)
The podcast host/chairs will be overseen by the Podcast committee.

The committee shall work with the School of Social Work to maintain the Social Work Experience podcast. Duties may include but are not limited to identifying and securing guest speakers, creating marketing materials, advertising the podcast, recording episodes, and creating an episode schedule.
