Affirmative Action Complaint Form for Collingswood and Oaklyn Public Schools

The mission of Collingswood and Oaklyn Public Schools is to build upon the strengths of its diverse school community and commit to providing an inclusive and supportive environment that inspires and empowers every student.

The Board of Education Affirmative Action Program shall recognize and value the diversity of persons and groups within society and promote the acceptance of persons of diverse backgrounds regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status. The Affirmative Action Program will also promote equal educational opportunity and foster a learning environment that is free from all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and harassment.

The public is reminded that attempts to resolve all concerns and complaints should first go through appropriate staff members and administrators at their school site. Concerns unable to be resolved at the school site should be referred to the Superintendent's Office.

If a person believes they have been discriminated against and there has been a violation of the district’s affirmative action policy, please use this form to record your concern(s). If the situation does not warrant an affirmative action investigation, your concern will be forwarded to the appropriate administrator.

If the AAO determines that the submitted complaint is an affirmative action concern, an investigation performed by the AAO or designee will begin.  In general, the process goes as follows:

  1. An affirmative action claim is submitted.
  2. An affirmative action investigation starts and will be completed within ten (10) working days
  3. The AAO or designee interviews the person initiating the AA complaint.
  4. The AAO or designee interviews the alleged offender.
  5. The AAO or designee interviews any additional witnesses associated with the complaint.
  6. The AAO or designee makes the determination of whether or not the district’s affirmative action policy has been violated.
  7. The AAO or designee submits a “Summative of Findings” to the person making the complaint, the person who may have violated the board policy, and the superintendent. (Within original ten (10) day window)
  8. If the board policy has been violated, the superintendent will determine any action(s) as a result of the violation.
  9. If either the complainant or the alleged offender feels the determination is invalid, he/she may appeal to the superintendent within ten (10) working days of receiving the "Summative of Findings."
  10. The Superintendent will have a hearing and written decision within ten (10) working days of receiving the appeal.
  11. If dissatisfied by the Superintendent's decision, an individual may appeal to the Board of Education.
