Intrepid in the Pacific
1:00pm – 1:45pm (ET)
Using images and oral histories, students will discuss the experience of the USS Intrepid in World War II, the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Tokubetsu Kōgekitai kamikaze suicide attack tactic, introduced in October of 1944. The experiences of Intrepid's crew will be explored, including the celebrated Gun Tub 10, a battle station assigned to Black sailors who braved their post to fire on kamikaze planes as the ship came under attack.
