Official Contest Rules and Guidelines
1. All contestants must submit the official application form no later than May 1, 2019 in order to compete.
2. Contestants may be individuals, organizations, businesses, or neighborhood groups. Contestants competing under an organization’s name or individuals who are sponsored by an organization must provide information on the application form identifying both the organization and each individual authorized to participate on its behalf.
3. BBQ, for the purpose of this contest, may be any flavor of BBQ.
4. BBQ must be from an original recipe and made by you, the contestant.
5. Each contestant’s BBQ will be reviewed by the Special Events Committee for freshness and originality. Any BBQ deemed unacceptable by the Special Events Committee will be removed from the contest.
6. This is an outdoor event. The contest will take place rain or shine, unless the Special Events Committee determines that existing or imminent weather would pose a hazard to Festival attendees.
7. Each contestant will be issued a 10x10 area. Each contestant will be responsible for supplying their own tent, table, chairs, and the necessary paper goods to serve the attendees. Electricity will be available at the cook-off site but you must provide your own drop cord extensions to connect to the electrical sockets which may be some distance from your serving space.
8. The judging for this event is “People’s Choice”.
9. Contestants are responsible for providing any supplemental signage or material identifying the contestant, all necessary cooking and serving utensils, an appropriate means for maintaining the serving temperature of their BBQ throughout the contest, a small fire extinguisher (if propane cookers or grills are being used) and any decorations or theme props they may desire for their serving space. We will be unable to allow any vehicles or trailers either in or adjacent to the serving area. This specifically excludes using a vehicle or trailer as part of contestant’s decorations or cooking apparatus.
10. The Health Department mandates the following:
    a. You must have a dated receipt of your meat showing where and when it was purchased. Your receipt must be given to the Health Inspector on request, so bring it with you to the contest.
    b. You must state where your BBQ was made.
    c. You must keep your BBQ hot, but do not burn it.
    d. You must keep your serving space clean and sanitize your hands often. (Gloves are suggested)
    e. You must keep your serving area neat.
11. Contestants are not allowed to sell any items from their serving space, including food or drink.
12. For safety and health reasons, there will not be any pets allowed near or around the serving areas.
13. Contestants are responsible for removing all cooking implements and decorations from their serving area and leaving the area in a clean condition at the conclusion of the contest. Contestants may not begin the breakdown and removal of equipment and decorations from their serving area until the presentation of the awards is completed.
14. The following timeline applies to this event:
a. 8:00 am – 9:00 am – unloading time. Once vehicles have been unloaded, drivers will be directed to the designated parking area.
 . 9:45 am – Opening ceremonies will begin
a. 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Tasting & Voting will be open along with all the other events taking place.
b. 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Ballots will be tallied and winners determined
c. 2:45 pm – Winners will be announced and prizes awarded near the shelter.
15. Each festival attendee who purchases a BBQ tasting ticket will receive a ballot to vote. Only ballots deposited in the official ballot box during the tasting time (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) will be counted.
16. There will be prizes awarded for 1st and 2nd place (People’s Choice), based on official ballot count
17. The BSL Special Events Committee reserves the right to disqualify and/or remove a contestant from the contest in the event of any conduct that results in a serious breach of these rules or conduct deemed by the committee to constitute a hazard to Festival attendees.
