MAT800 Course Options
Course Description:
PBAE Graduates explore the tools they will need to keep their artistry alive. They also learn how to digitize evidence of artistic and teaching performance. During the independent study, online course, or BFA studio course-audit experience, PBAE Graduates explore key personal dispositions of the artist-educator, personal identity, and unique self-qualities, and they articulate how these qualities shape their lives as artists and creative educators. During their studio practice exploration (audit, cohort, or independent), PBAE Graduates develop and expand on studio art practices as they continue to explore the artist/educator theme. By examining personal learning goals, they select an art form to study that either supplements or expands their existing repertoire. PBAE Graduates create a digital art collection either for an exhibit or in preparation for the digital portfolio of at least TWO completed works, and prepare a final reflection that examines the strengths and challenges of maintaining high-quality teaching while continuing to work as practicing artists.

All options except the Studio-Audit option are offered during evening or weekend hours to accommodate a teacher's schedule. Please note that all options are dependent on availability and enrollment. We will do our best to honor preferences, and your MAT Pathway Advisor will share with you what is specifically possible.

THREE DIFFERENT OPTIONS:
Please use the following form to elect which is your preferred option for Summer/Fall 2021.
1. You may choose to AUDIT AN EXISTING BFA COURSE in FALL 2021 and meet with your facilitator for MAT online outside of that class. (First offering of this course will be Fall 2021 and is contingent on the studio offering schedule)
2. You may choose to take a 5-week online course where you complete your studio practice components on your own. (First offering of this course will be June/July of 2021)
3. You may choose to take an independent study for 5 or 15 weeks.

Note: All courses are subject to enrollment. Your MAT Pathway Advisor will direct you to the best option to ensure your class will run.

Note this form is ONLY FOR MAT800. A separate enrollment form will be sent for those enrolling in MAT837)

***PLEASE REVIEW EACH OPTION AND ELECT WHICH YOU WISH TO TAKE FOR EACH CLASS***

STUDIO AUDIT OPTION A--MAT800: The Artist as Educator Experience (Post-Bacc to MAT Pipeline)
In this option, PBAE Graduates complete the course as follows:

* Sign up for the MAT800 course and pay the $1,800 fee on the CS portal

* After registering, you will meet with a Pathway Advisor to discuss which BFA courses are open, when they meet, and their applicable studio fees

* Register to audit one of the BFA courses offered this FALL 2021 (BFA Studio courses meet 6 hours weekly for 15 weeks during the course-offering schedule (not flexible))

* Pay the additional studio fee (varies depending on discipline and studio-access needs)

* Schedule your 1:1 meetings online with your MAT Pathway Instructor to occur outside of your BFA studio class meetings (weekly and can be flexible)

* Attend your BFA studio class and complete all the components of this undergraduate course (per that course's unique syllabus. You will need to "pass" this course to meet the requirements for MAT800)

* Attend your weekly MAT Pathway 1:1 meetings to complete all the graduate components of this course (includes additional readings and a cumulative project that elevates the undergraduate course to a graduate-level course. You will need to both pass the undergraduate course you are auditing as well as the work you do for the pathway. This work is the same for all versions of the MAT800 program)

* PBAE Graduates selecting this option will receive confirmation of enrollment within 5 business days by email, and a Pathway Advisor will contact the PBAE Graduate within 10 business days to discuss options for registering for a BFA Studio class. Registration for BFA courses may not be available until closer to the start of the Fall 2021 semester, but we will hold your spot on a first-come-first-served basis.

This option is the least flexible of the three options to complete this course. Please note: Our MAT Teacher Candidates also complete an audit of a BFA Studio course in this way for their MAT800 requirements, so they will also be seeking audit placements alongside you if you choose this option.

The course you elect to audit in the BFA program will be subject to availability. During social distancing requirements, our studios have limited space and PBAE Graduates engaging in this program may be subject to weekly Covid-19 testing requirements and/or proof-of-vaccination as MECA creates a "bubble" of safety for our on-campus PBAE Graduates, faculty, and staff. The course you choose is pre-scheduled to take place in our studios and labs at a particular time, meeting 6 hours weekly in person with homework and studio practice outside of class time. To participate in this option, you will need to agree to the absence policy and its unique, undergraduate syllabus in addition to the MAT800 syllabus that wraps around this course.

You will also need to pay the studio fee for the unique course you select (each studio is different and there are different costs associated with lab-supplies and maintenance. For example, the wood-working lab has different equipment and maintenance needs than the Animation and Game Arts lab or the Textile and Fashion lab). Each lab also employs a tech and requires a training with the tech before access is granted outside of class time.
ONLINE COHORT OPTION B--MAT800: The Artist as Educator Experience (Post-Bacc to MAT Pipeline)
In this option, MAT800 PBAE Graduates:

* Enroll in a course scheduled JUNE 27 to AUGUST 1, 2021 and pay the fee $1,800 on the CS Portal

* After enrolling in the course, a Pathway Advisor will reach out to confirm you have elected to take OPTION B and confirm your enrollment's meeting dates and times

* Commit to Zoom video-conference-based meetings Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:00PM

* Creation of new art work for the term and digital capture of the work

* Complete work on the Canvas Course Website (on our learning management system), including discussions, readings, videos, research posts, additional software as needed, and digital capture of newly made artwork for the term

* PBAE Graduates selecting this option will receive confirmation of enrollment within 5 business days by email. Instructions for logging into our learning management system and accessing course content will be provided 3 days prior to the start of course. Note: courses are subject to cancellation due to low enrollment.

In this option, PBAE Graduates complete MAT800 in an online course with a cohort of peers pursuing the same option using our *new* eLearning infrastructure and compression-model which allows us to compress a 15-week course into a 5-week course using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities. Interdisciplinary studio practice is folded into the delivery of the program, but unlike the AUDIT option, PBAE Graduates are primarily self-directing their studio practice development.

In this eLearning version of the class, PBAE Graduates may choose from several different studio-development tracks to engage in various "practice-boosters" toward a final, digital collection of newly-created artworks. In addition to the studio practice, PBAE Graduates in this program work with their MAT Pathway instructor to connect studio practice to education practice.

INDEPENDENT STUDY COHORT OPTION C--MAT800: The Artist as Educator Experience (Post-Bacc to MAT Pipeline)
NOTE: THIS OPTION IS ON HOLD UNTIL OCTOBER, 2021
'
AS WE HAVE REACHED OUR CAPACITY FOR THIS SELECTION. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT OUR COURSE, WHICH RUNS JUNE 28-AUGUST3, IS FULLY ONLINE WITH ONLY **THREE** ZOOM-BASED MEETINGS (AND IS THUS VERY SIMILAR TO AN INDEPENDENT STUDY).

MOST OF YOUR WORK WILL HAPPEN ASYNCHRONOUSLY.
