ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Woodland Youth Crew Members will become familiarized with the varied ecosystems in Prospect Park and their management, specifically focusing on the woodlands also known as Brooklyn's only remaining Upland Forest. They will learn how to identify plant species and use best practices to properly plant and care for native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species.  

Typical duties to include the following: vegetation control of exotic invasive species using mechanical means with the safe operation & maintenance of equipment. Equipment types utilized are hand saws, wheelbarrows, loppers, hand pruners, a variety of shovels, and pitchforks. The crew will learn about various erosion control methods and have the opportunity to develop the skills to successfully install them along with fence and cedar rail. 

Team members will work collaboratively to achieve the outlined objectives of the each seasons varied projects.  They will learn the skills required to enter, keep, and maintain records documenting work activities under supervision of the Youth Program Manager. Returning crew members will work with the newer teammates to mentor and develop the skills of the newer crew members in all above skill related responsibilities.

Team members are expected to maintain and promote a positive work environment by behaving and communicating in a cooperative and professional  manner with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

Other tasks and job duties may be assigned by the Youth Program Manager or Management.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a New York City public high school. They must possess valid working papers at the time of application. There is a requirement to be physically able to perform heavy repetitive tasks,  such as lifting, moving objects, and carrying 30 lbs on a daily basis. The positions require working on steep slopes and other challenging conditions including in all types of weather conditions. Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills are desired. The projects require being the ability to work collaboratively on a team as well as the occasional independent project.
