WJMS 2020-2021 7th grade registration
There are 6 class periods in West Jefferson’s school day. All students will be automatically enrolled in the four CORE area classes (Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies).

Changes to Electives for the 20-21 school year:
- Composition, traditionally a required elective for 7th grade is no longer offered.
- 7th graders will take World Language and Cultures one of the trimesters. Please see below for details. This course will also prepare students to take Spanish 1 which is now being offered to 8th graders.
- Intro to STEM, traditionally requires for TSA students is now optional but highly encouraged for 7th grade TSA students.

ALL 7TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE WORLD LANGUAGE AND CULTURES CLASS FOR ONE OF THE TRIMESTERS UNLESS THEY ARE TAKING ANOTHER REQUIRED ELECTIVE (GT Elective, Study Skills, Reading Strategies, etc . . .)

World Languages and Cultures (Trimester) This course introduces phrases and cultures from a variety of languages in order to introduce languages and the idea of second language acquisition to students. This course may emphasize recognition of written words, vocabulary, speech patterns and grammar as well as cultural aspects (major events, foods, art, etc.).

The 2 remaining periods of the day are for elective courses. All electives are one class period. Music classes (Band and Orchestra) are yearlong; other electives last one trimester (12 weeks).

· Students on READ Plans and/or students who do not show literacy proficiency on state assessments may be scheduled into a reading support class in place of some electives.

· Students who have not shown math proficiency on state assessments may be scheduled into a math support class in place of some electives.

· Students on IEPs may be scheduled for support classes in place of some electives.

· DUE TO THE NATURE OF SCHEDULING IN THE SPRING, ELECTIVES CLASSES MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Band and Orchestra are not beginning classes. Most students have been playing instruments since 4th grade. If you would like to sign up for band or orchestra and you have no playing experience, you need to contact Mrs. Sarche’ first to ensure that you will be successful in an instrumental class.

Instrumental Music - Band (Year-Long) Symphonic Band is a class for advanced instrumentalists who have had at least one year of experience on their instruments. Emphasis will be on literature and growth in technical skills. There will be required evening performances at WJMS.

GT Elective (ALP Students)Students choose projects, which may take many forms, and complete them under the supervision of a teacher. Projects involve planning, research, and a high degree of personal reflection. This class provides opportunities for independent, high achieving learners to explore areas of interest. This is a participatory class where students will be engaged in higher-level thinking and autonomous learning. The research process, project design and development, and presentation techniques go beyond the scope of conventional learning.

Art 7 (Trimester)This course constitutes the second level of art for those who wish to continue from 6TH grade exploratory art. Classes will cover art history, as well as design, drawing, painting, print making, clay, and careers in art. Sketchbook included with fee.
Visual Art 1 (Trimester)Visual Arts Level 1 courses provide to students the foundational knowledge and opportunity to explore an art for or variety of art forms and to create individual works of art. These courses may also provide a discussion and exploration of career opportunities in the art world. Initial courses cover language, materials, and processes of a particular art form and the design elements and principles supporting a work of art. Although Visual Arts Level 1 courses focus on creation, they may also include the study of major artists, art movements, and styles.
Visual Art 2 (Trimester) Completion of Visual Arts 1 REQUIRED. Visual Arts Level 2 courses provide to students the continued building of knowledge and opportunity to continue to explore an art form or variety of art forms and to create individual works of art. Visual Arts Level 2 courses may provide a discussion and exploration of career opportunities in the art world. VSA2 courses may cover the specific language, materials, and processes of particular art forms and the design elements and principles supporting a work of art. The students at VSA2 are advanced from VSA1 and have become more adept, the instruction regarding the creative process becomes more refined, and students are encouraged to develop their own artistic styles. Although VSA2 courses focus on creation, they may also include the study of major artists, art movements, and styles.
Drama 7 (Trimester)Students will study theater arts, which includes pantomime, monologue, using the voice, stage presence, lighting and sound, and theater history. Students will:· Develop skills in pantomime and body control.· Improve voice control in reading projection, articulation and inflection.· Memorize and perform a monologue and a scene.· Participate in production of a play as actor or technician.· There will be required day and evening performances at WJMS.
Choir (Trimester)In this course, students will be provided an opportunity to participate fully in all the aspects of vocal ensemble.· Students will develop skills in vocal production, choral singing, care of the voice, reading rhythms, and pitches. In addition, they will learn “solfege”, sight-singing, ear-training, posture, choreography, and prepare for performances on stage.· There will be required performances outside school hours at outside locations.
Tech Theatre (Trimester)This hands-on course introduces students to the action that goes on “behind the scenes” in a theatrical production. This may include: the specialized vocabulary of technical theatre; ability to analyze and critique the design elements found in school and outside productions; the experience of gaining a practical approach to problem solving, leadership and working well under pressure; and the exposure of students to the history of theatrical design and current trends in technical theatre.
Digital Design I (Trimester)In Digital Design I students make projects and solve problems in web design, game programming, 3D modeling, photo manipulation, and audio production. Students will learn about professional practices and explore college and career paths in these areas, which might include class visits from current professionals. This course can also include a student portfolio of digital work showing their creativity and problem-solving skill.
Video Game Design I (Trimester)Students learn how to design, write, and test software using object-oriented software development environments. Students are introduced to the concept of humane game design and explore how computer programs and games can be used to communicate values, ideas, and thoughts. Students explore the idea of game and how this transfers to computers. Students learn how to convert their ideas into visual, audio, and story assets for their game software. Topics covered include fundamental design processes, use of variables in programming, program control and flow features, iterative statements, and incorporating files and graphics into software.
Literature in Film (Trimester)Literature in Film will challenge students to look at a film as a literary piece of work by analyzing and connecting the visual elements of a film to the elements of a novel. Students will understand how visual effects translate into the written word by analyzing both film and novel. Literature will include children’s classics, graphic novels, and classics.
Physical Education (Trimester)The Physical Education program is designed to develop and enhance a wide variety of physical skills and activities, along with increasing overall fitness levels including: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, agility, flexibility, and motor coordination. This class will also help develop a positive attitude toward physical activity, help create a positive self-image, increase cognitive knowledge of health related fitness, promote teamwork, and encourage good sportsmanship. Students are expected to wear the required WJMS P.E. uniform and be prepared to fully participate on a daily basis.
Pre-Engineering 7 (Trimester) Pre-Engineering students will explore technology-oriented applications of mathematics and science their study of design and the production process. Students will also use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems and investigate future careers in technology and engineering.
Intro to STEM (TSA Students ONLY)The Intro to STEM class fosters personal growth, leadership, and opportunities in technology, design, and engineering. Students apply and integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts through co-curricular activities, competitive events, and related programs. The design process is a key component of this project-based class.
Robotics (Trimester) Robotics courses develop and expand students’ skills and knowledge so that they can design and develop robotic devices. Topics covered in the course may include mechanics, electrical and motor controls, pneumatics, computer basics, and programmable logic controllers.
Mentorship (Trimester) – Please write a few paragraphs to let us know why you would make a good mentor in the special needs program. This elective teaches group problem-solving and strategies for helping make lasting connections between students with and without disabilities in the school community. It may also be used as a class that focuses on developing leadership skills and organizing school-wide activities, and activities which model positive, respectful and extraordinary behavior
Teacher's Assistant - Please indicate the teacher you would like to TA for - NOTE- This year, teachers are not able to give pre-approval of TA's. Since they will be selecting TA's in  August, there is no guarantee that the teacher you list will opt to have TA's next school year.
