CIHS Survey 2023
For nearly 40 years, the Chebeague Island Historical Society (CIHS) has been preserving the history and material culture of Great Chebeague Island and sharing stories about the island’s connection to the local area and the Atlantic World. CIHS is housed in the District 9 Schoolhouse, which celebrated its 150th anniversary this summer. The organization is funded with membership dues, donations, grants, proceeds from the Museum Shop, sponsorships, and special programs. We strive to create a sense of place and enrich the lives of those who have ties to Chebeague, while staying relevant in today’s world through exhibits, research, programs, and publications.

CIHS is experiencing generational change with senior leadership retiring and the winds of time providing both challenge and opportunity. We are very interested in hearing from the entire Chebeague Island Community about your experiences with the Historical Society, suggestions for improving the organization and our offerings, and suggestions regarding how we can better support the community as the steward of historical collections and knowledge.

At this important juncture as the CIHS transitions to the next generation, we are asking for your input to ensure the organization is relevant to our community in the future.
