Workshop Description:
We find ourselves in a moment of deep reckoning in higher education. We must evaluate how our teaching may enforce racial inequity, as well as how to actively and continuously disrupt racism and enact change within and beyond the classroom.
In this workshop, you will learn about subjugation and hidden biases in educational settings and the impact of racial inequality in academia. You will be introduced to key concepts in anti-racist pedagogy and examine research and practices which move away from racial biases. Through interactive engagement and collective brainstorming, you will learn effective strategies to shift toward anti-racist practices - both in the classroom and in course content creation.
After this workshop, you will be able to:
- Identify the impact of racial inequality in academia
- Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in anti-racist pedagogy
- Apply and adapt anti-racist strategies to your pedagogy
Facilitator: Talin Abadian (tabadian@uci.edu), Senior Pedagogical Fellow
This workshop partially meets the requirements for the "Inclusive Teaching" module for the Certificate in Teaching Excellence.
