Anonymous Feedback on Permanent Incomplete Notations on Transcripts and Academic & Financial Penalties due to Incompletes

If you have ever had an “Incomplete” grade, even if you completed the coursework for the course, you know that the UCLA transcript notation policies permanently note that you took the “Incomplete” and indicate a grade change and grade change date. This reveals how much extra time you needed, which is especially discriminatory if you have disabilities or chronic illness.

“Incomplete” grades automatically “lapse” to F grades if not completed in the following quarter. This harmful practice causes GPAs to plummet, which may lead to the removal of financial aid, scholarships or grants and thus poses further unnecessary barriers to academic success.

USAC (Undergraduate Students Association Council) and the GSA (Graduate Student Association) have worked for four years to change UCLA’s Incomplete policy. We are presenting a proposal to the Undergraduate and Graduate Council of the Academic Senate requesting they implement long-overdue changes: eliminate all Incomplete notations, including grade change details and date the grade was changed, and place final grades in the correct enrollment quarter. We are demanding that students stop being treated as less competitive academically and financially because they have taken Incompletes. Finally, in line with the UC-wide norms, we are requesting all Incompletes be extended from a time period of 10 weeks to 1 year.

Please help us help you! Your anonymous testimony will directly help us prove to the university that we must get rid of the punitive Incomplete policies once and for all!

Please include your feedback here!
In addition, please look at the 3 specific questions below and add anything under those that apply!

If you identify as disabled or chronically ill, d/Deaf or b/Blind, we need your testimony to support this change! (It doesn't matter if you are registered with the "Center for Accessible Education" or not.)

Please tell us about:

a.      Your experience needing an "Incomplete" because of your disability-related needs for extra or extended time

b.      Anything about how "Incomplete" grade notations negatively affect you as a disabled student  -- things like being less competitive compared to non-disabled students academically, penalized and not eligible for certain fellowships, scholarships, or awards, etc.

c.     Any incident where you were pressured or required to disclose your disability in order to explain the "Incompletes" on your transcript. If you feel comfortable, please include details on how this has harmed you!

If you have ever been viewed negatively or less competitively for a fellowship, grant, award, graduate program, or job because you have one or more "Incomplete" on your transcript, we need your help! Please share the details of this here. This will help us prove that "Incomplete" grades hurt UCLA students!
Have you ever needed more than the standard 10 weeks to complete the coursework with an "Incomplete"? Please share your experience - it will help support our recommendation to extend the Incomplete from 1 quarter to 1 year.
