Petition in Opposition to House Bill 237
February 8, 2021

We, the alumni of the New México School for the Deaf (NMSD), strongly oppose House Bill
237 – Public & School for the Deaf Cooperation.

So many of us continue to love NMSD for allowing us to thrive as full fledged human beings when we were students and developing our human potential as members of a close-knit community.  Community membership that continues today – no matter when we may have graduated from the school.

Our expressed commitment against HB 237 is a recognizable way of expressing our love for NMSD and our profound desire that the school continues to be a viable, highly effective option in the continuum of placement options required by federal law for deaf and hard of hearing students for years to come.

Truly, HB 237 feels like a terrible, blunt slap in our faces.  As concerned alumni, we refuse to be silent about HB 237 endangering the future of our beloved NMSD.  Once again, more than anything else, it is about today and tomorrow’s NMSD students and their families.

HB 237 cannot pass!
