Forum Freelance Fund - Bursary Application
(Ce formulaire est également disponible en français. Le lien se trouve sur la page des règles françaises.)

THIS PREAMBLE AND ALL INFORMATION PROVIDED IN ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS BELOW CONSTITUTE PART OF YOUR AGREEMENT WITH THE FORUM, WHETHER OR NOT A BURSARY IS GRANTED.

Please ensure that you have answered all the questions below and have read and understood the revised FFF rules. By submitting this application, you are legally agreeing to the terms expressed in the rules, as elaborated or supplemented here.

Applications may be submitted at any time, but budgets are limited. Funding for the program may become depleted at any point in our financial year, which runs from May 1 to April 30. The value of FFF bursaries in this stream may vary, not normally exceeding $2,500 CAD.

Applications are processed as they come in, but bursaries are not allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. The jury - composed of people with significant experience in this area - has discretion to approve, deny or defer consideration of applications as it finds appropriate in the circumstances.

Applications may be made in English or French, the languages in which HEFAT or similar courses are delivered by our approved course providers. We recently added an approved course provider offering training in French. If you complete the form in one language, are granted a bursary and then select a course in the other language, we may require proof of proficiency before approving that choice.

PLEASE MAKE YOUR CASE HERE.  Tell us what kind of safety training you need, and why you think you need it. Bursaries have most often in the past been given for HEFAT or similar training, but our jury will also consider many other types of safety-related training that may be more appropriate to your particular needs. Training is no longer limited to the courses offered by our approved, professional course providers. We also have connections through the ACOS Alliance with journalism organizations in many countries who work to keep freelancers and other journalists safe. It is sometimes possible for us to make ad hoc arrangements for you to take part in appropriate training offered by one of them. Tell us your need, and if you present a good case we will let you know  whether and how we may be able to meet it. *
How long have you been working as a freelancer? *
Do not include any period of volunteer or internship work, or assignments associated with a journalism course. Answer in months or years as appropriate.
If the period above is less than 18 months, do you have upcoming assignments that may put you in danger? *
Required
If you answered “YES” to the question above, give sufficient details of the assignment/s for the jury to assess your training needs in that connection:

Required
If you checked "other" please explain:
What approximate percentage of your income is earned from journalistic freelance work? *
If you did not select 100% above, explain briefly how the rest of your income is earned:
Are you on contract to any media organization, such as a newspaper, magazine, radio or TV network or on-line news provider?  Answer yes or no, and if yes, identify the media organization. *
If you answered yes above, is your work presented by that outlet as that of a freelance contributor?
Clear selection
If you answered yes above, please tell us where we can find examples of this, or provide the email address for a person in authority at the media outlet/s concerned who can give confirmation.
Do you work through any agency which supplies freelance services to media organizations? *
If you answered yes to the question above, please:  (1) Provide the name and address of that agency and an email address for an appropriate  person there with whom we can correspond about your case.   (2) State whether your arrangement with the agency includes receiving safety training at its expense.  Working through an agency does not, in itself, disqualify you from receiving an FFF bursary.
Provide contact details for two referees in media organizations that have taken your work and HAVE AGREED TO EMAIL REFERENCES  WITHIN 7 DAYS directly to info@journalismforum.ca . If you are not a Canadian citizen or resident, at least one of these referees must be from a Canadian media organization for which you have done freelance work abroad. *
Referees must be persons of standing in media organizations that have used your work, who are able to address the quantity, quality and nature of it with particular reference to your need for safety training.
Have you previously completed one or more hostile environment training courses? *
If so, give course details - including course title and length, provider and date. Applications for refresher courses are considered.
Please provide a copy of your C.V. (resumé). You may copy and paste it here, or you may email it the same day that you complete the form to Info@journalismforum.ca.   *
INDEMNITY:  By submitting this application you agree to indemnify the Forum, its members, officers, contractors and employees; any contributor to the Forum Freelance Fund or to the Forum in general; the members of the FFF jury; and any course provider including its officers, trainers and employees, in respect to any act or omission in determining the outcome of the application or the provision of training arising from it. *
Submitting this application also means you are accepting that the published FFF rules as pertaining at the time of application, together with any elaborations or supplemental conditions contained in this document, constitute a binding agreement between you and the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma and that your agreement below is to be considered the equivalent of a signature to that effect. You also warrant that the information you have provided is correct and does not fail to disclose anything that would be material for the jury to consider. The Forum hereby agrees that acceptance of the application binds it to that agreement with you, and that this declaration is to be considered the equivalent of a signature to that effect. *
