Humanitarian Award
The AAO Humanitarian Award was established in 2011. The award recognizes significant contributions to improve the quality of human life that extend beyond the usual scope of private practice, academic functions or organized dentistry. Criteria for the award:
1.
Any AAO member, AAO constituent or component organization, or WFO-affiliated organization may nominate AAO member in good standing of the AAO for the AAO Humanitarian Award. The recipient will be selected by the AAO Board of Trustees. A nominator is limited to one Humanitarian Award nomination per year.
2.
Posthumous nominees must have met the criteria listed in numbers 1 and 3 for the award.
3.
Nominee has rendered outstanding public humanitarian service to improve the quality of human life of those served. The service must be beyond the scope of private practice, academic organization, and the usual function of organized dentistry.
4.
Nominee has made significant contributions to such areas as government, community economics, public welfare, or any area which improves the general health or well-being of the community, state, nation or foreign nation.
5.
Nominee provides leadership and humanitarian volunteer efforts that reflect favorably upon the profession of dentistry.
6.
Nominee provides volunteer service that reflects a significant devotion of time, energy and altruism that brings honor to the profession without indirect or direct personal or organizational gain or profit.
7.
Nominee has established a legacy that is an inspiration to other members of the dental profession and beneficial to underserved populations.

This award is presented by the AAO to those who, in the judgment of the Award Committee, have made contributions to orthodontics in addition to other valuable and devoted services to the AAO and its membership. Previous winners can be found here.

The ADA requests nominees from the AAO, which in turn asks the constituent societies, each year. The AAO Board of Trustees selects the nominee(s) to submit to the ADA from constituent generated-nominees and others.
As stated by the ADA, “This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions in clinical investigations that have advanced the diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention of craniofacial-oral-dental diseases, as well as outstanding research endeavors in other areas. Selection is based upon the scope of the nominee's research, with special emphasis on its impact on clinical dentistry, and on publications in refereed journals. Award recipients typically demonstrate a high level of creativity and innovation.” Selection is based upon: 1) the scope of the nominee’s research with special emphasis on its impact on clinical dentistry and 2) publications in refereed journals. The successful nominee will be a member of the ADA, if eligible.
Lifetime Achievement Award in Orthodontic Research
The award recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions to the science related to the specialty of orthodontics over the course of their lifetime. Criteria for the award are:
1.
Nominee has made significant contributions to the science related to the specialty of orthodontics through research.
2.
Nominee has made significant contributions of original, outstanding, or innovative discoveries in orthodontic research across his/her lifetime.
3.
Nominee has established a legacy of research and discovery that is inspiring to members of the academic community.
4.
Nominee has produced information that is useful, or potentially useful, in advancing the clinical practice of orthodontics.
5.
Nominee does not have to be an orthodontist.
6.
At the time of selection of the awardee, nominees that are deceased will not be considered.
7.
The AAO Board of Trustees shall make the final decision.
8.
This award would be made annually, unless it was determined that a suitable nominee is not available.
9.
Nominees and past awardees will also be considered with regard to the AAO nomination for the Norton Ross Award made by the ADA.
Outstanding Contribution Award
The award recognizes an individual who has rendered distinguished service to the American Association of Orthodontists and to the specialty of orthodontics. The person may be an orthodontist, come from an allied health field, from the corporate environment, or be a private individual. Winners can be found here.
