Eurasian Empires: "The Mystery of the Missing Horses: How to Uncover an Ottoman Shadow Economy"
Welcome to the third event of the Spring Quarter!
KOH Choon Hwee is Assistant Professor in UCLA's History department. She originally applied to do a PhD to explore the medieval connections between China and Iran but switched to the Ottoman studies field after her first year at Yale. Currently, she is working on her book manuscript on the history of the Ottoman postal system. Her research has won awards from the Middle East Studies Association (Malcolm Kerr Dissertation Award 2020) and Yale University (Hans Gatzke prize for Best Dissertation in European history). Her first article, "The Ottoman Postmaster" came out in Past & Present in 2021 and her next article is forthcoming in Comparative Studies in Society and History in summer 2022. She did her MA at the American University of Beirut and her BA at the National University of Singapore (with one year spent at Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and another year spent at the University of Arizona as an exchange student).
