Civil & Chemical Engineering: Industrial Idea Challenge!
(Problem Provided by Terra Agro Biotech Pvt Ltd)
Broad Theme: Waste Management towards Valuable Resources
Submission Deadline: 15/12/2022
TOPIC- Design of an Anaerobic Digestor
Common manure from animal industry, such as chicken litter and cow dung manure, is normally viewed negatively as an unpleasant and unviable waste product, which must be disposed of without any value. However, Chemical Engineering provides us with several solutions, as always, to even convert such waste products into resources. One such solution is an Anaerobic Digestor, where microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen, to produce Biogas and digestate, for commercial applications.
Students, you can firstly read up a bit on the topic, then brainstorm about how to go about designing a Anaerobic Digestor, which means roughly answering questions such as, what type and capacity of equipment is required, what chemical / biological materials are required and in what amounts, what would be the operating conditions, time and energy requirement, etc. Some specifications demanded are given to you (below). Additionally, you can also explore if renewable energy can meet the requirements of the process, to make it greener, and if so, how to source it.
Feed: 10 tons/day; Feed type: Sludge: mixed chicken litter and cow dung manure
Solids content in feed sludge: 50%, with density 1200 kg/m3
Desired products: Biogas and Digestate (product of Anaerobic Digestion)
