The UC San Diego main campus burns fossil gas for electricity generation and heating/cooling, thereby emitting over 170,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. For 3 years our Green New Deal at UCSD climate movement has pushed for a just transition to run the campus on renewable-generated electricity. Our efforts led, in 2022, to the creation of a Fossil Free Pathways Task Force to guide the 10 UC campuses to make electrification plans so they don't need to burn gas, and as part of this, ~$1.5 million is being allocated to UC San Diego. But making plans is not the same thing as making a commitment to act - this process could go on for years - and attention must now also focus on financing. The scientific consensus, California state law, international governmental targets, and the Fossil Memorial supported by 85% of voting UC faculty all demand substantial greenhouse gas emissions this decade. Chancellor Khosla - we beseech you to commit NOW to getting the main campus off the gas by 2030.
