“Even if you hit 10%, if you play good defense, you won’t be dropped to the 2nd team.”

Winning coach' LG coach Yeom Kyung-yeop did not hold back on his passion by putting on his own gloves and demonstrating defense during spring camp.

LG, which won the Korean Series for the first time in 29 years last year, is spending spring camp in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. Coach Yeom emphasized that they are starting again after last year's combined championship.

They are no longer intoxicated with the joy of winning, and are creating an atmosphere of starting over from the beginning to secure the top spot in the new 2024 season. He is emphasizing and ordering veteran players to grow one step further than last year and to improve their performance.

Defensive training time for LG infielders. Coach Yeom, who was watching the movements of the players receiving fungo from one side of the ground, stopped training for a moment and gave a demonstration himself with a glove on his hand.

Kim Beom-seok, who is preparing to play first base along with the catcher, and Kim Seong-jin, who converted from a catcher to an infielder, were catching a pungo at third base and stopped for a moment to intuit Manager Yeom's demonstration. Coach Yeom skillfully demonstrated a series of movements to the two players, from the preparation position to the catching motion.

Then, Koo Bon-hyuk and rookie Son Yong-jun received a hit at second base and came to third base. Coach Yeom looked at Son Yong-Jun's preparation posture for the catch and adjusted the position of his right hand. When he placed his right hand on top, close to the glove on his left hand, he instructed him to move his right hand further out of the glove, saying, “If the ball bounces, it will hurt your fingers.”

Manager Yeom also said something to Shin Min-jae, who became the starting second baseman, when he saw an opening. “Keep your legs moving,” he said, emphasizing taking small steps until you get the ball.

Four infielders participating in this LG camp, along with starting pitchers Austin (first baseman), Shin Min-jae (second baseman), Oh Ji-hwan (shortstop), and Moon Bo-kyung (third baseman), are Koo Bon-hyuk, Kim Min-soo, Kim Seong-jin, and Son Yong-jun.

Last year, veteran Kim Min-seong played a salt-like role as the 'backup starter', but this year's LG infield's backup lineup has changed a lot. Min-seong Kim was traded to Lotte, and Joo-hyun Jeong retired and started anew as a coach. Seo Geon-chang signed a contract with KIA after requesting release.

Faces that were not at LG last year are aiming for backup positions. Koo Bon-hyuk, who was discharged from the military (Sangmu Baseball Team) in November of last year, and Kim Min-soo, who was acquired through a trade with Kim Min-seong from Lotte, are competing for the 'backup starting' position. Even before Koo Bon-hyuk entered the military, his defensive skills were recognized. As he played for Sangmu, his hitting also improved. Minsu Kim can play all four infield positions. Although his performance at Lotte was lacking, a trade could serve as motivation.

The more he is a backup starter, the more important defense is. Coach Yeom Kyung-yeop had poor batting skills from the time he joined Pacific in 1991 as a player until he retired from Hyundai in 2000, but his defensive skills were excellent. He said, “Even though I hit .100 with a batting average, I never went down to the second team for 10 years. “He is good at defense, so he can be in the first team just by playing good defense,” he emphasized.
