Overview:
Although the Earth is a water planet, water is a scarce resource on it. Most water on the Earth is located in the seas and oceans which is salty and not fit for human consumption. A large part of the freshwater is located in the ice caps and glaciers which is also not accessible to man. Out of the remaining freshwater , a large part is either underground or present in water vapours in the atmosphere which is also beyond human use. Only less than 0.3% of the total water flows in rivers and lakes in the form of freshwater which is available for human consumption. Hence, there is a great need to co serve water in our daily life.
From time immemorial, people have dug wells and stepwells to extract groundwater. Rainwater seeps through the soil and gets trapped in numerous cracks and gaps inside the underground rocks . The layer of the rocks permanently saturated with water is called Aquifer and its top portion is called the Water Table.
Liquid water , on absorption of heat, can change into vapour forms called Evaporation. The opposite process is called Condensation . A body can either float, sink or just float in a liquid depending on how dense it is in comparison to the liquid.
Water cycle is the vast natural circulation of water between the land and the air that makes the total amount of water at any ace on the earth constant. It is driven by the Sun.
