The Black Youth Advisory Board Application 2024-2025
The Black Youth Advisory Board (BlackYAB or BYAB) is part of the African American Planning and Design (AAPD) Committee for THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT: THE NEXT PHASE. YAB, in partnership with the Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council (BACHAC) and the San Mateo County of Behavioral Services, will plan and/or implement recommendations from the African American Community Assessment 2023. 

Youth and Young Adults will develop and design events/activities for and by Black youth in San Mateo County that focus on substance use prevention. The Youth and Young Adults will help implement recommendations of the African American Community Assessment that focus on cultural heritage identity, social connection, and outreach/engagement.

Youth and Young Adults will gain leadership experience, community service hours, a small stipend, recommendations, and an opportunity to impact the Black community. 

Interested Youth and Young Adults who identify as Black who live, work, or study in San Mateo County are invited to apply.  Leadership Opportunity is July 2024 - July 2025.

THE ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD
  1. Develop social media campaigns that can touch Black youth, especially those living in San Mateo County.
  2. Work in partnership with the College Mentor/Project Manager to share the needs of youth.
  3. Participate in community events to share our message.
  4. Work with a team with other youth and young adults to plan and implement activities that meet our three priorities (cultural heritage identity, social connection, and outreach/engagement).
  5. Attend orientation, training, and meetings as needed
  6. Attend bimonthly YAB meetings mostly virtual by Zoom or in person, as needed.
  7. Attend gatherings and events in person and help champion getting other youth involved.
If selected, Youth and Young Adults must attend YAB orientation hosted at the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum in Redwood City.
ROLES OF YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY in San Mateo County

African American Planning and Design (AAPD) Committee:  An county-wide intergenerational, diverse committee of Black/African American leaders and residents, including youth and young adults, to plan and oversee recommendations that are by and for the community.  Opportunity Details:  Meets monthly primarily virtual for 1.5 -2.0 hours | Recruiting:  youth 12-17 years old/young adults 18-24 years old, 2 members

Black Youth Advisory Board (YAB)  to plan activities of interest of peers that are fun and focused on cultural pride, connection with other Black peers to prevent substance use or promote factors that help Black youth withstand substance use.  Opportunity Details:  Meets monthly primarily virtual for 1.5 -2.0 hours and attend planned activities in person as needed | Recruiting:  youth 12-17 years old, 10-15 members

Black Young Adult  Mentor to support the YAB in their priorities and be a role model for withstanding using substances. Opportunity Details:  Meets monthly primarily virtual for 1.5 -2.0 hours, and attend planned activities in person as needed | Recruiting:  young adults, 18-24  years old, 2 mentors]
