Global Surgery Program
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of congenital anomaly and the second leading cause of death in infancy and childhood, particularly in low- and middle-income countries due to limited human resources and infrastructure. JW Lee Center for Global Medicine led by Professor Woong-Han Kim has been cooperating with a number of countries including Nepal, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, and Côte d'Ivoire to strengthen the capacity of local medical staff and to promote a team-based approach in congenital heart surgery and patient care. The program includes dissemination of medical knowledge and hands-on experience to the local medical staff, from diagnosis, surgery, to post-op care. Furthermore, an evaluation research has been conducted to investigate the performance and the impact of the program.

Nepal Hospital Infection Control & Prevention Program
The April 2015 Nepal earthquake gave a significant challenge to the JW LEE CGM's partner hospital in Nepal, Dhulikhel Hospital (DH); a total of 2,003 emergency patients were exposed to unsanitary space, causing hospital-acquired infection problems. DH became aware of the importance of hospital infection prevention and control (HIPC) system in utilizing proper use of antibiotics in surgery and medical practice. Therefore, JW LEE CGM initiated the HIPC education programs with medical professionals from Korea. The workshop and invitational training for Nepal medical staff are held annually, and continuous HIPC consultation continues after the education programs for a follow-up.

Nepal/Vietnam Ultrasound, CT, MRI Program
Nepal and Vietnam are among the highest countries in Asia for Maternal and Mortality Ratio and Infant Mortality Ratio. Although most of the main causes of maternal and infant deaths are preventable through proper obstetric ultrasound services, proper antenatal care in limited in both countries. JW LEE CGM teamed up with professors in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), Department of Pediatrics, and Department of Radiology from Korea and initiated an education program on fetal and congenital anomaly ultrasonography, and visited Nepal for lectures and live-demo education targeting medical staff from OB/GYN, pediatrics, and radiology.

Vietnam Trauma Center Capacity Strengthening Program
In Vietnam, injury is the leading cause of death in children under 18, road traffic accidents being the fifth leading cause of death. However, information system for pre-hospital trauma care is currently insufficient and limited. Therefore, with government’s support, Military Hospital 175 is constructing a new trauma center and requested consultation and training from JW LEE CGM to improve the quality of the trauma patient treatment. JW LEE CGM teamed up with professors from the Department of Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery and Rescontructive burn, and held workshops in Vietnam and invitational training programs with continuous consultation for a follow-up.

Primary Care Capacity Strengthening Program in Vietnam
Under the rapid industrialization in Vietnam, the number of patients with Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) continues to increase and the need to strengthen its primary health care system has been raised to address this burden of disease. The JW LEE CGM’s education program aims to set the sustainable primary health care system through education for primary health care personnel at local area. Instead of carrying out direct training programs by Korean research team, jointly developed curriculum with Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) have teamed up to meet the local needs. And on January of 2019, Hypertension(HTN) Training program was implemented in Thuan-an district.

Global Health Education Curriculum Program
As the world becomes increasingly globalized and Korean ODA(Official Development Assistance) is becoming developed, the Global Health field, which is one of the largest sectors of ODA, became more significant recently. In line with the excellent health care system of Korea, it is crucial to have medical experts of global health in Korea and play an active role in the field of global health. The JW Lee Center has initiated the course for global health in the curriculum of Seoul National University, College of Medicine since 2014 to educate medical student about global health. The purpose of this Project on the Development of the Curriculum for Global Health is to provide educational opportunities for medical students who are interested in global health by opening both compulsory and elective courses in the regular curriculum.

Nepal Improved Cooking Stove Program
Three-quarters of Nepal's rural population still depend on and use biomass as a significant energy source for cooking and heating. In the mountainous region of Nepal, Kitchen and bedrooms are not separated from each other; therefore, cooking is done in the same space which affects respiratory and eye health. In such environment, improved cooking stove (ICS) is well-known as a practical solution to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) Contributing SDG for health (3) and energy (7). The goals of our project are to: 1) the improvement of indoor air pollution, 2) the reduction of respiratory and eye disease symptoms, and 3) impact on socioeconomic status. ICSs will be installed in the households of Manekharka, Nepal, followed by survey and interviews of the residents to assess the effectiveness.

The Philippines School Health Education Program
Sisters of Mary School in Silang, Cavite, Philippines is a home to 5,000 students from low-income families in the province. Since most of the spaces they use at school, including dormitories, are shared with others, the students are very vulnerable to infectious diseases. Not only do they take in new diseases at school, but they also pass on the contagious diseases they have developed while vising home for holiday. Seoul National University College of Medicine has operated a group of volunteers, named ‘CaSA’ and had them visit Philippines for such work for almost 7 years. The medical mission volunteers consist of students at medical school as well as working professors and doctors who volunteer for the project. Medical school students were mainly responsible for pre-screening and the doctors from different departments took part in diagnosing and treating the patients.
