What is happening?
NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are offering a limited number of live ocean exploration interactions for viewers to explore Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Viewers are able to view live broadcasts from a research vessel and engage in live dialogue with scientists, engineers, and on-board team members..
About the live interactions:
Broadcasts are about 45 minutes. Interactions will be facilitated by the Inner Space Center (
innerspacecenter.org) at the University of Rhode Island. This is a tremendous opportunity for viewers of all ages to learn more about ocean exploration, deep-sea biology, marine technology, and STEM careers.
Indirect Connections (45 minutes): This type of connection is available to any individual, group, classroom, or institution that has access to the internet. A live link will be created and distributed by the Inner Space Center. Each viewer or group will have the capability to ask questions throughout the live broadcast by typing them into a chat box on the website hosting the live stream. Questions will be monitored by the host. These programs will happen in the afternoon and evening.
Technical Requirements:
- Internet connection (with a connection fast enough to load a video without buffering)
- Ability to type in questions
- Projector/screen to display incoming live video
- Speakers for incoming audio from presenters
There will be two themed programs that run on different days. Each of the programs are described below and each are run as a direct and indirect program.
New Life After Tragedy: Exploring the Shipwreck Portland (August 25)
Join this expedition program to learn more about the shipwreck Portland, one of the most iconic shipwrecks in New England. Researchers will bring you to the seafloor where Portland remains to examine the biology, unveil the history, and share how marine technology is helping us better understand the seafloor.
The Case of the Mystery Schooner: Exploring an Unidentified Shipwreck in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (August 26 & 27)
Explore a mystery shipwreck with the science team on the seafloor of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Researchers will be using state-of-the-art marine technology to examine the schooner and discuss the biological and historical significance of the shipwrecks. Join the expedition as you dive into the unknown to reveal the secrets of the sea. This live interaction will introduce you to the excitement of exploration in NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
