Call for papers

The year 2024 has a great importance in the history of ethnographic education in Budapest. It marks the 90th anniversary of István Györffy's appointment as the first full professor of ethnography at Pázmány Péter University in 1934. To open the series of events are organized on this occasion, the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore at Eötvös Loránd University holds a conference exclusively for university students. By bringing together students and scholars with various departmental backgrounds, this anniversary meant to be a celebration of teaching and learning ethnography and cultural anthropology in Hungary and beyond its borders.

Our institute aims to create a platform to students to show their talents, thereby inspiring their academic work. We also provide opportunities to learn together from keynote lectures, workshops, and visits to various exhibitions. Our objective is to encourage representatives from different departments to gain insight into each other's interests and work. We hope to strengthen the links between institutions and foster new forms of collaboration.

We invite BA, MA, and PhD students to apply and present the outcomes of their research as well as results of the ongoing projects of their institutions! Additionally, students studying ethnography and cultural anthropology in English in Hungary are also welcome to join the conference. They will have the opportunity to present their papers or posters in English.

Presentation format: 15-minute paper/poster presentation

Please note that we can accept up to 6 presentations (oral or poster) per institution, but each presentation can have multiple speakers.

Deadline for registration: 29 February 2024. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 7 March 2024. The organizing committee will also inform the participants about the possibilities of gaining financial support in covering their travel and accommodation expenses.
